It looks like Celtic are ready to sanction a move for the highly-rated defender, who needs to be playing a lot more regularly.
This summer transfer window is going to be a big one for Celtic. No matter how this season ends for the Hoops, it is quite clear that a major squad revamp needs to happen. This current roster is not good enough to even be winning against Scottish opposition comfortably, forget about Europe.
The fact that Celtic might miss out on the league title in a season when the Rangers have been poor themselves is almost unthinkable. But at the same time, it looks like that is very much on the verge of happening.
They currently find themselves five points behind Hearts. Also, the Rangers have a two-point lead over their Glasgow rivals. So, winning the league title from here, with merely seven games left in the Premiership, is not going to be an easy task.
In the long run, a lot of changes need to happen at Celtic. One of them might revolve around the future of Colby Donovan.
One of the few players to come out of the academy and get a decent amount of chances, having made 27 appearances this season, Donovan now finds himself in an interesting situation.
Alistair Johnston is closing in on a return from a long-term injury. On the other hand, Julian Araujo might be back pretty soon as well, having dropped a hint on Instagram recently.
That would leave Donovan third in the pecking order. And if Araujo ends up getting signed on a permanent basis in the summer, the youngster would benefit from a move away rather than stay at Celtic and remain on the bench without much prospect of regular football.
According to Football Insider, Celtic will consider any loan offers that come in for Donovan ahead of next season. The youngster remains very highly-regarded behind the scenes at the club. But the Hoops could be prepared to sanction a temporary exit if they are well-stocked at right-back.
This feels like something that could end up depending on the future of Araujo. That being said, Johnston's worrying injury record is not something that can be ignored either. The time might have come to start thinking of a starting XI without the Canadian international.
So, the right-back situation could get interesting at Celtic next season. Finding the right solution is up to the club. Oftentimes lately, they have failed to do that. Hopefully, it turns out to be a different story in the summer.
