It looks like Celtic are very close to making their next signing of the summer as the club have submitted a bid for the player.

Celtic still have a lot of work to do with merely days left in this summer transfer window. The Hoops' 5-1 away defeat against LASK to knock them out of the Champions League qualifiers has deflated the fanbase to a large extent.

The only thing that can be done though is try to put it behind them and focus on what is still in control. For now, those are the three domestic competitions and the Europa League trophy.

Unfortunately, the impact of that LASK defeat is goint to be felt for years to come, because it is going to directly impact the players that Celtic will sign in the remainder of this summer transfer window.

Going into that game against LASK, the club were being linked with names like Niko Sigur, Gvidas Gineitis and Ermin Mahmic. But now, it looks like the Hoops are looking at a completely different profile of midfielder. One that might not be a 'win-now' addition but another project signing instead.

Celtic bid for Joel van den Berg

According to Rik Elfrink, Celtic have now contacted PSV with a bid for Joel van den Berg. A multi-million euro deal seems imminent.

PSV wants to bring back Ayoni Santos for their midfield. That deal is not yet completely finalised.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Celtic can get this done or not. But Van den Berg does feel like a midfielder who is one for the futurue.

He has only played eight senior games of football so far. And if the signing does go through, it would be unfair to expect the 19-year-old to come in and immediately make an impact at a club like Celtic.

That is a problem though because Celtic do seem to lack legs in the middle of the park at the moment. This has been an issue for quite some time now. And with Arne Engels leaving this summer, it has been an even bigger worry recently.

Is Van den Berg the right signing?

Would Celtic have lost 5-1 against LASK if they had someone like Engels in that middle of the park in that game?

Anyways, there is little point dwelling on that result for much longer. It is in the past. The future lies ahead.

Celtic have been handed a run of Europa League group phase fixtures that one would feel can be navigated, if they perform at a high level. But of course, after what we saw away against Austria, it is difficult to raise fresh hopes around European football.

Do you think Van den Berg is a good signing for Celtic under the current circumstances? Please let us know in the comments.
