The Tottenham Hotspur player has been linked with Celtic after Martin O'Neill and Mark Fotheringham were spotted at one of his games.
Martin O'Neill is expected to step down as the Celtic interim manager at the end of the season. But he recently admitted how he would be open to continuing on at the club in an off-the-pitch role.
It also looks like O'Neill might be helping the club identify potential transfer targets for the summer window.
O'Neill was recently spotted at the Preston North End vs QPR. Celtic coach Mark Fotheringham accompanied him. Naturally, it is being viewed as a scouting mission. But who could they have been watching?
One name that has been suggested by multiple outlets as a possible answer is Alfie Devine. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is currently on loan at Preston North End.
At 21 years of age, he has only made a couple of appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, and none of them in the Premier League.
He has been a standout for Preston North End this season though. Devine has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 43 appearances for the Championship club.
Devine has spent most of his time out on loan at lower league English clubs. He spent last season at Belgian side Westerlo, where he did well too, scoring six goals in 32 appearances for them. As a result, he might need to consider his long-term future in the summer.
A move to Celtic would be a great next step for someone like Devine. It is also worth mentioning that the Hoops have signed players from Tottenham Hotspur in recent past.
A couple of names that come to mind immediately are Joe Hart and Cameron Carter-Vickers. Both came in and became integral parts of the Celtic team immediately.
In the case of Carter-Vickers, he was in a similar place to Devine, where he was always out on loan but never really getting his chance at Tottenham Hotspur.
It is worth mentioning that Carter-Vickers did spent an initial season on loan at Celtic as well before being signed on a permanent basis. Could that be the route that the Hoops go with Devine as well, if they are indeed interested?
For now, this is all speculation in the media based on O'Neill's visit to watch Preston North End vs QPR. It is very possible that they might have been watching somebody else entirely. Devine should have caught the eye though, as the 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspur loanee provided an assist in the 1-1 draw.
