Celtic are believed to be in talks to sign a midfielder from one of their Scottish Premiership rivals in the summer.

This upcoming summer transfer window is going to be a vital one for Celtic. If there is one thing that has become clear this season, it is that the Hoops have lost a lot of ground since the end of the Ange Postecoglou era, when they were almost untouchable in Scottish football and won a treble somewhat comfortably.

Right now, they are having a tough time keeping up with even Scottish opposition. Even the games that they have won, they have done so narrowly. At the weekend, it took a late winner from Kelechi Iheanacho to get past Dundee FC. And it has been a similar story on most occasions.

Celtic need to strengthen their squad significantly in the summer. Interestingly, it looks like they have their eyes on players from their Scottish Premiership rivals.

According to CeltsAreHere, initial negotiations were held during the winter window between Celtic and Hibernian over Miguel Chaiwa, but no agreement was reached. Further contact between the clubs has taken place in recent weeks and the dialogue between both sides is ongoing.

Chaiwa is a name that has been the rounds of the Celtic rumour mill for quite some time now. And it looks like the clubs interest in signing him is concrete.

A deal could not be reached in the winter because Hibernian wanted more than Celtic were willing to pay. But that is always going to be the case in the middle of the season. It might be a lot easier to engineer a move in the summer window.

Chaiwa is the kind of midfielder Celtic have been missing for some time now. He sits deep and breaks play up.

When it comes to Celtic, their midfield has been far too easy to play against for far too long.

It has been evident, especially in big games, when the opposition has been able to control the midfield battle. Celtic need to make sure that that is not the case moving forward as well.

They need a proper defensive midfielder in there. The club have tried their luck a few times but it has not worked out. The likes of Ismaila Soro, Oliver Abildgaard and Tomoki Iwata did not last long at Parkhead.

Let's see if things end up differently if they are able to sign Chaiwa from Hibernian in the summer. He has the added advantage of already knowing Scottish football well and that should help with his settling-in period at a club like Celtic.
