The 40-year-old has been the likeliest manager to get the Celtic job next summer.
It is quite safe to say that Celtic will end up bringing in a new manager soon. Martin O'Neill is expected to see out the season unless results go completely south. But beyond that, the 74-year-old is unlikely to continue.
If or when O'Neill does end up leaving the Celtic post, it would be a tough task to replace him. And quite a few high-profile names have been linked with the club in recent times.
The most recent name is that of David Moyes. But he is not the most likely candidate for the impending Celtic managerial vacancy. Instead, it is a 40-year-old, who is currently without a club.
40-year-old manager most likely candidate to replace Martin O'Neill at Celtic
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, journalist Mark Guidi said on the Go Radio Football Show when speaking about the Celtic job, amid the recent links to Moyes:
“His contract’s up in the summer, so he’s got eight months to go. I think one day — and I’ve thought this for a long time — he’ll either manage Celtic or Scotland. He’s destined to do so.
“I think he’s knocked back the Celtic job at least once, if not twice. He’s an outstanding manager; you only need to look at his CV. He is an outstanding manager. And Martin O’Neill is going in the summer. He will go at the end of the season. One hundred per cent, Martin O’Neill will go at the end of the season.
“I think it’s Kieran McKenna who is lined up — however, if David Moyes is available, then what a coup that would be for Celtic. If you offered me a free bet right now, I would put my money on Kieran McKenna.”
Of course, McKenna is someone who has been linked with Celtic on numerous occasions in the past as well. But a move has never materialised.
He is without a club at the moment, having left Ipswich Town despite guiding them to Premier League promotion.
It is believed that it might take a £8 million fee for a club to bring in McKenna before next summer. So, Celtic might just choose to wait it out, even if they need to bring in a new manager in the middle of the campaign.
Is McKenna ready to manage a club like Celtic?
It is hard to predict whether McKenna is ready for the Celtic job or not. His only role so far has been at Ipswich Town.
But it goes without saying that he exceeded all expectations in that post. He went in when the club was in League One.
He would guide them to back-to-back promotions, taking them to the Premier League quicker than anybody could have expected and then back up one more time, following their relegation.
So, McKenna has shown that he can get his team to play winning football, when they have the ingredients to do so.
Obviously, many would point to Ipswich Town's failure to stay up in the Premier League under McKenna. Admittedly, that proved to be too big a mountain for him to climb.
Can McKenna deal with the pressure of managing a club like Celtic, where the expectation is to win pretty much every domestic game? Or would he struggle?
