Celtic need to strengthen their backline in the summer and one defender could be back in the mix soon.

The fans will be hoping that the Celtic squad looks very different come next season, because this one is quite clearly not up to the mark. That would mean bringing in fresh faces. Hopefully, quality ones who can walk straight into the first-team.

At the same time, it could also mean the return of some familiar ones. Those who might not have gotten enough opportunities to show what they were capable of but are proving themselves out on loan.

When given a chance, Maik Nawrocki barely put a foot wrong last season. But for some reason, Brendan Rodgers did not give him chances when other options were available.

Unsurprisingly, Nawrocki left on loan this season and joined Hannover in the German second division. He has been a standout performer for them.

Hannover are believed to have an option to buy included in the deal of about £2 million. But Nawrocki has not completely closed the door on a potential return to Parkhead yet.

According to the Daily Record, when talking about his future, Nawrocki seemed to keep all options open as he said: "There are several options for me at the end of the season. I could stay here, go back to Celtic or maybe go somewhere completely different."

While Nawrocki seems open to the idea of a return to his parent club in the summer, his comments do hint that he would prefer to remain at Hannover. He said: "I am closer to my family in Bremen too. During my time in Warsaw and at Celtic, we saw each other very rarely. Now it's only an hour's drive and I visit more often.

"I really like it in Hannover. The city is incredibly beautiful. I felt comfortable in the team right from the start. And the weather is also much better than in Scotland!"

Of course, it could all come down to how Hannover end this season. Currently, they are in a race to get promoted to the Bundesliga.

If they can earn that promotion, there is a good chance that they will take up the option to buy in Nawrocki's loan deal. But if they fail to go up, it has been suggested that such a deal would not be financially feasible for the second division side.

Nawrocki might be the type of player who deserves a second chance at Celtic, having never really gotten a fair shot at a first-team role the first time around. And his opinion about life in Glasgow might change quickly, if he finds himself in the mix of things, which he largely was not during the two years he was here.

One thing is clear, Celtic will need to strengthen their centre-back ranks in the summer. It is uncertain when Cameron Carter-Vickers will return to action. And after the injuries he has dealt with over the last few years, will he even be the same player anymore?

On the other hand, Celtic have had their troubles building out from the back with two left-footed centre-backs in Auston Trusty and Liam Scales. Benjamin Arthur has done well enough when given a chance, but he will return to Brentford at the end of the season.

So, there could be a role for Nawrocki at Parkhead next season. Let's see if he does indeed make a return or not.
