The Everton insider has shared his view on the recent links involving David Moyes and Celtic.
It is not hard to understand why David Moyes is someone who continues to be linked with a move to Celtic for years, even though it has not materialised yet.
Moyes spent the first few years of his playing career at Celtic. So, that connection already exists between the Scotsman and the Hoops.
It is as a manager that he has made his biggest impact in the game though. In his first spell at Everton, he was phenomenal, so much so that Manchester United selected Moyes as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Of course, we all know how that turned out. Moyes was gone after a season. But over the past decade, he has been able to resurrect his career with West Ham United and now back at Everton.
He won the Conference League with West Ham United and now has the Merseyside club sitting at fifth in the Premier League. This is the same team that had spent several years barely avoiding relegation before Moyes' return.
So, Moyes remains a very capable manager. And he is believed to be out of contract at Everton at the end of this season.
With the ownership situation of the club also up in the air, there is a possibility that Moyes could end up leaving Everton at the end of the season. Would that open up a window of opportunity for Celtic to make a swoop and finally bring him to Parkhead?
Everton insider makes David Moyes to Celtic Claim
Keith Wyness is the former chief executive of Everton. So, one would imagine he still has a good understanding of what is going on at the Merseyside club.
Unfortunately, he played down the Moyes to Celtic rumour as a 'media link' while talking to Football Insider. Wyness said: “Moyes, as I said at the start, he’s very disciplined and he’s very loyal.
“And so he won’t be having talks behind anybody’s backs with Celtic, I’m sure of that. But he’ll keep an eye on it.
“And it’ll be part of the leverage with him and with the Friedkins and any new manager. And he has an option there. There’s no doubt.
“He’s been linked with Celtic before, he played for Celtic. And look, he’s a proud Scotsman.
“And I think if he was to go to Celtic, the next job after that would probably be the Scottish national manager, in my view.
“But I think Moyes, he’s got a long time left still in the Premier League. And I don’t think Celtic is necessarily the right career move for him.
“But I don’t think he’ll be thinking of jumping at all.”
“From Celtic’s point of view, if they were to line David up, then that would be great news for them.
“And for the board, that would be something the fans would receive pretty well.
“And if they were to say that, yes, Martin’s going to carry on through the rest of the season, but David Moyes is coming in, that would be great for them.
“But I don’t think they can achieve that.”
Moyes joining Celtic seems unlikely
To be honest, the only way Moyes would end up at Celtic Park next season is if he decides that he has done everything there is to do in England and makes a return to Scottish football.
Eventually, one can see Moyes getting the Scottish national team job. We have seen so many elite managers like Jurgen Klopp, Carlo Ancelotti, Xavi, Thomas Tuchel, Zinedine Zidane and more make that switch to the international game.
Could Moyes be next? Time shall tell. Of course, if Celtic are able to bring him in, it might be a good move for them.
It is quite certain that Martin O'Neill won't continue as Celtic manager beyond this season, if he reaches that point at all. The team are struggling for results right now. The latest of their setbacks was a 4-1 defeat against Benfica in the Europa League.
Moyes is a manager who can produce results. But at the same time, we have seen him struggle under the weight of expectations at Manchester United in the past. Could the same thing happen at Celtic if he ended up getting the job?
