A lot of Celtic fans seem open to the prospect of the former Manchester United player joining the Hoops following a stellar performance.

Celtic's performance and result against Dundee United would not have pleased the majority of the fanbase. Martin O'Neill's side continued to struggle in what is turning out to be a concerning campaign for them, despite their four-point lead at the top of the table.

The team is struggling to perform and key players are out injured. One would hope that Celtic look to strengthen the squad in the winter transfer window. Right now, they are nowhere near good enough.

If they do that, there might be some quality prospects in the Scottish Premiership itself, with one of them running the show against Celtic in midweek.

Celtic fans left impressed by Dundee United midfielder

Zidane Iqbal is a name that many fans would have been aware of even before his terrific performance against Celtic in the 2-2 draw. He came through the youth ranks at Manchester United but only made one appearance for them before moving to the Netherlands.

Iqbal made 49 appearances over his three years with Utrecht, the club Vasilis Barkas joined from Celtic. The midfielder ended up joining Dundee United this summer. And if early indications are anything to go by, this could be his breakout campaign in senior football.

Celtic fans were most certainly impressed with what they saw of Iqbal in midweek. One wrote: "Zidane Iqbal ran through McGregor last night like he wasn’t there."

There are already calls from the supporters for the club to try and get a deal done for Iqbal, as one wrote: "Celtic should be making a call this morning and getting a deal completed for Iqbal from Dundee United."

Will Celtic sign Iqbal?

Obviously, it is impossible that Iqbal's performance did not catch the eye of the Celtic coaching staff. Whether the club will make a move for the midfielder or not remains to be seen.

Over the years, Celtic have been linked with quite a few players from other Scottish Premiership teams. But more often than not, those rumours have ended up nowhere of substance.

It does feel like there is a ceiling to what Celtic are willing to pay in order to sign players from a rival Scottish club.

Clubs from leagues around Europe are increasingly scouting players from the Premiership though, as has been clear from the number of those who have gotten moves in recent times.

So, Celtic have missed out quite often. And even if they are interested in signing Iqbal, that does not mean they will be successful.

On paper, if Iqbal continues to perform like this, Celtic making a move would be a no-brainer. The Hoops' midfield has arguably been their biggest weakness this season, and for a while, to be fair.

They need some fresh air in that area of the pitch. And a 23-year-old Iqbal would most certainly add that.
