It is remarkable how many spots Celtic need to improve this summer, despite winning a league and cup double last season. The truth of the matter is that the Hoops were nowhere near the mark, deteriorating in every meaningful category. They scored 39 fewer goals in the league while conceding 15 more times.
So, there has been a ton of talk about signing strikers as well as defenders. But one cannot overlook the goalkeeping ranks either.
Kasper Schmeichel has retired after a serious injury. That means that signing another goalkeeper is the bare minimum Celtic need to aim for.
Then there is a discussion to be had about Viljami Sinisalo. Is he good enough to be the starting goalkeeper? Or does he need to develop and improve further? He underperformed his xGOT, conceding more goals than he should have, according to the data.

Celtic have been linked with Tjark Ernst of Hertha Berlin recently. But there are a few stumbling blocks.
Ernst outperformed his xGOT significantly. But that was in the second division of Germany. Will that translate to the Scottish Premiership and whichever European competition Celtic end up in?
Also, there have been conflicting reports on his future. Some have suggested Wolfsburg have agreed a deal to sign him, others have claimed they have not yet.
So, at the very least, Celtic should keep an eye out for alternatives. And a quality goalkeeper has become available as a free agent.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Yan Sommer has left Inter Milan as a free agent, as expected. He is open to a new chapter.
Sommer is 37 years of age. So, that will raise some eyebrows. But he is not past his prime yet.
Sommer was the starting goalkeeper for Inter Milan as they won the Serie A title last season. So, he can still deliver the goods.
Celtic, on their part, have been very comfortable with bringing in veteran goalkeepers in the twilight of their careers. They did so with Schmeichel. Before that, it was Joe Hart.
So, this move might be exactly what appeals to Celtic. And Sommer is a player who can come in and improve the team immediately. Now, it remains to be seen if a move is made or not.
