It looks like Lazio have set their sights on the 22-year-old Celtic player, who could be on his way out.
There has been a lot of talk about the kind of players that Celtic should target in the summer transfer window. But on the other hand, there are a number on their current squad who could be heading for the exit door.
In the case of some, it would be best for all parties involved. But then, there are others Celtic will be hoping to hold on to beyond this campaign.
One such player is Arne Engels. Signed for a club-record fee from FC Augsburg, the Belgian international has managed to establish hismelf as a key figure and was missed badly during his recent absence through injury.
Engels was on the receiving end of a £20-plus million offer in the winter itself, which Celtic turned down. It was the right decision in the middle of the season. But if a bid of that magnitude did arrive again, in the summer, it would test the club's resolve, that is for sure.
That goes to show though how highly Engels is regarded in footballing circles, although he does not always seem to get a ton of credit from the fans.
Now, it looks like there could be a tug-of-war to sign Engels in the summer, with two quality teams involve.
According to Lorenzo Lepore, Engels is a profile that has caught the attention of Lazio's hierarchy. The Italian club are continuing talks that were already opened in January, and his name could become a concrete target should Dele Bashiru depart. Nottingham Forest remain alert to the situation and could make another move in the summer.
The report also goes on to state the Belgian midfielder will carefully look into the offers that come his way this summer. Any move would depend on the project and the club on offer.
Of course, that opens the door to a Celtic exit. It remains to be seen if the club are able to convince Engels to remain at Parkhead beyond this season.
At 22 years of age, it feels like he could remain at Parkhead for a season or two more without losing much of his transfer value.
It just does not feel like we have even got to see the best of him in a Celtic shirt yet. He took his first season settling in. And just when he was getting into his stride, the injury derailed his campaign. So, let's hope he chooses to stay put for a while longer at least.
