Celtic have been tipped to agree a contract extension with one of their players by Martin O'Neill.

Celtic have a lot of decisions to make this summer. The fans would not be devastated to see a large portion of the current squad depart. Over the course of the season, it has become very clear that many of these players are not good enough to playing for the Hoops.

That being said, it will be equally important for the club to keep hold of players who can contribute positively for Celtic and make their next transition, which this summer is going to be, easier.

In the game against St Mirren, one player who played a major role in winning it in extra-time was James Forrest.

It was Forrest's brilliant cross which found Kelechi Iheanacho, who headed it in to give Celtic the lead. They did not look back from there and scored four times within the space of six minutes to put the game to bed and book their place in the Scottish Cup final, where they will face Neil Lennon's Dunfermline Athletic side.

Of course, Forrest's performance off the bench was a reminder about what he can still bring to this team.

The winger's direct running at defenders, with tired legs late on in games, can still give the opposition trouble. One could argue that the Hoops should have used him more prominently this season, as they have been in tight situations in several of their recent matches.

Anyways, Forrest's contract with the club is set to expire at the end of this campaign and Martin O'Neill seems to believe that he should be handed an extension.

According to The Celtic Way, O'Neill said regarding the contract situation of Forrest: "I would like to keep James for one more year at least, so that he can see his career through at the football club.

"I would be asking the board, I'm sure, to do it. I think James would stay for another year. He's 34, isn't he? 34.

"Just the little bursts, the one versus ones. He has changed a number of games for us. He changed the game at Aberdeen. I know Nygren scores the goal, but he came on and changed that. We scored from him getting the cross at Rangers as well. He's definitely played a part.

"Neil Lennon was telling me, which I've known for two or three months, that he really is a proper lad."

Forrest is a one-club man. He came through the youth ranks at Celtic and has never played for another team. So, many fans would like to see him retire at Parkhead. It just feels right.

On top of that, Celtic do need to keep someone like him around. He has seen it all and done it all in Scottish football, several times over. So, if the club are going to go through a transition, they must have players like Forrest around to help guide the next generation and make them understand what succeeding at Parkhead is all about.

Perhaps most importantly, Forrest is still capable of contributing on the pitch, as we saw against St Mirren. And as long as that remains the case, there is no point not offering him the chance to continue here.
