Celtic will now need to move quickly if they want to sign the Irish international left-back.

Celtic fans would have been delighted to see the Rangers drop points in the opening matchday of the season, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Dundee United.

Obviously, that result gives Celtic a chance to open up a gap over their Glasgow rivals on Flag Day itself. They will kick off their campaign on Monday.

In the long run, though, Celtic need to strengthen their squad further before the summer transfer window closes. One could argue that the roster has been weakened so far and it was pretty weak to begin with.

They could do with one of the players who helped Dundee United earn a draw against the Rangers on opening day. But Celtic are not the only ones looking to sign him.

Celtic have serious competition in race to sign Irish international

Will Ferry started against the Rangers and played the entire game as well. He is believed to be on the transfer wish list at Celtic as they look for someone to provide cover for Kieran Tierney. But if the Hoops want to sign him, they will need to be quick about it.

According to the Daily Record, Belgian side Anderlecht have opened talks with Dundee United over a deal for Will Ferry.

It might not take a significant transfer fee to sign the Irish international. Dundee United accepted a £1.7 million plus deal with add-ons from Sigma Olomouc last month. But the left-back held talks with the Czech club and ultimately decided against the move.

Obviously, that kind of fee should not be a problem for Celtic. One can only wonder why a deal has not been agreed yet if they are genuinely interested in signing him.

Would Will Ferry be a good signing for Celtic?

Someone like Ferry has already proven that he is capable of performing at the Scottish Premiership level. He is a full Republic of Ireland international as well.

So, if Celtic did end up signing him, he has what it takes to play a backup role to Tierney. The Scotsman definitely needs one, owing to his long injury history.

As a result, Celtic should always have someone capable of stepping into that starting role. And it is hard not to feel that they already had him in Marcelo Saracchi.

Saracchi proved himself to be more than good enough last season. In fact, many felt he had a better campaign than Tierney. Yet, for some reason, the Hoops did not show enough interest in signing him on a permanent basis despite him being available for a reasonable fee.
