It looks like Rangers have now opened talks for a player Celtic have already put in a transfer bid for.

Celtic will know that they have a lot of work to do this summer after what was an underwhelming season for them, even though they won a double.

Now, if that was 'underwhelming' for Celtic fans, one can only wonder what their Glasgow rivals thought. They once again went trophyless.

In fact, they finished behind Hearts in the league title race. And all of this came in a campaign when Celtic faltered time and again, which would be considered the Rangers' best chance at winning silverware.

This also came in a campaign in which the Rangers had spent significant money on strengthening the squad after a change of ownership.

It looks like both Glasgow rivals have a common transfer target. It is someone Celtic have already made a bid, or potentially two for. On the other hand, the Rangers have now held talks to sign him as well.

According to Football Insider, Rangers are interested in signing Sandefjord centre-back Zinedin Smajlovic this summer. The Ibrox hierarchy have held talks in recent days to sign the player.

Obviously, if previous reports are accurate, then Celtic have already failed with one initial bid for Smajlovic and have sent in a second one, which is a transfer package of around €6.5 million. But even that might not be enough to convince Sanderfjord.

Anyways, it remains to be seen how things play out in this Smajlovic transfer saga. It is very interesting though how often both Glasgow clubs end up targeting the same players in the market.

It is far from ideal if you are trying to complete a deal for a bargain fee, as the transfer valuation is inevitably going to go up, especially if there is the knowledge that both of Glasgow's giants are competing for a player's signature.

Smajlovic certainly looks like a talent worth keeping an eye out for. That being said, it would not be much of a surprise if he did not end up at either of those clubs.

Of course, this is another saga that might end up dragging out for a while. Celtic have been involved in plenty of those over the years.

Fans are hoping though that the club show a bit more efficiency and urgency than their usual self this time around.

It has cost them in the transfer market time and again over the years. Yet, the correct adjustments simply have not been made.
