It is being reported that Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks to sign the Celtic player in this summer transfer window.
While Celtic fans are hoping for the squad to be strengthened this summer, in reality, it looks like the club could see a number of their best performers leave in this transfer window. And replacing them will not be easy.
When we talk about Celtic's double win last season, names like Daizen Maeda and Kelechi Iheanacho are always mentioned as being instrumental. Understandably so, as both were immense in the final few weeks of the campaign.
But the fact of the matter is that Celtic would not even have been in the title race by then, if not for Benjamin Nygren's goals. Playing as part of a midfield three, the Swedish international scored 21 goals last season across all competitions. He had nine assists to go with it.
Yes, Nygren's overall performances drew criticism. But you cannot argue with his output.
Nygren is a starter for Sweden at the World Cup and has a chance to enhance his reputation further. Will he be playing his football at Celtic come next season?
According to Ekrem Konur, Tottenham Hotspur have moved into action for Nygren. Spurs are joined by Brighton and Bournemouth, with Celtic holding firm on a €30 million valuation.
To be honest, with the financial power of those teams, Celtic should be looking for more than that.
Konur further goes on to state that initial talks on personal terms between Nygren and Tottenham have gone well.
So, it should not come as a surprise if Tottenham end up trying to negotiate on a transfer in the very near future. Nygren does seem to be someone they have on their radar. And Spurs have looked eager to strengthen their squad this summer, having seen the team finish 17th in back-to-back seasons and this time around, they avoided relegation on the final day of the campaign.
It will also be interesting to see whether the likes of Brighton and Bournemouth end up making a push. Those are two of the best teams in the Premier League, when it comes to recruiting players and then moving them on for higher transfer fees a few years down the line. It is almost the same strategy as that of Celtic, but on a much higher scale.
Of course, Celtic are in line to make a much more significant profit. It was just last summer that they had signed Nygren from FC Nordsjaelland for around €1.5 million.
If he ends up getting a transfer move now, it would be around twenty times that figure, if not more. Surely one of the greatest moves in Celtic history when or if it does get done.
