Some fresh Celtic transfer news has emerged with the summer window just kicking off this week.
The summer transfer window is now underway. Celtic fans will be hoping for the board to show some ambition, urgency and efficiency this season. Last time around, it was the lack of those three things which almost marred their campaign, only for Martin O'Neill to come in as interim manager on two different occasions and salvage things.
That won't happen every time. Celtic will need to make sure that this squad is back to a position where they can dominate Scottish football again, not rely on late winners and results of other teams in a title race.
Signing new players will be vital. But at the same time, they will need to keep the quality talent they already have, at least as many as possible.
Unfortunately, it looks like some of them might already be considering other options or testing the waters of the free agency market.
Kelechi Iheanacho was signed on a one-year deal and spent most of the season out injured or as an impact substitute. So far, the club do not seem to have taken up the option to extend his deal by another year.
On the other hand, it looks like Iheanacho's camp might already be putting out feelers to other clubs, in case of a move is possible.
According to 67 Hail Hail, host Flavio Dias said while speaking on Atencao Vascainos:
“Tonight I received information also received an offer from a Nigerian 29-year-old striker, a player from Celtic in Scotland: Kelechi Iheanacho.
“A Nigerian player who played for Sevilla, played for Manchester City, for Leicester…
“A left-footed, experienced player who scores goals, currently playing for the Scottish champions.
“But there was a ‘no’ from the Vasco management and from Admar Lopes. These are offers that Vasco is saying no to.”
Vasco da Game are a Brazilian club and it looks like they have already said no to the offer from Iheanacho's camp.
But if they have already considered the idea of going out to Brazil, there is a very real possibility that such offers might have been made to other clubs across Europe as well.
In my opinion, Celtic need to extend Ihenacho's deal. Why this even is a conversation at this point is beyond me.
Iheanacho came off the bench to score so many important winners last season. And some might argue that he did not start many games. That is true. That being said, does it matter whether he starts or not, if he is making game-defining impact.
Football has increasingly become a game of squad depth and not just the eleven on the pitch. With five substitutes now, a coach can change half the outfield that they want.
Iheanacho's lack of starts towards the end of the season was most likely on purpose. It gave the Nigerian the opportunity to come on against tired legs and make the most of that.
It worked. He scored a ton of goals and won a lot of games. And when it is working, there is no reason to tweak with things.
