Here is the real reason Cameron Carter-Vickers was not in the Celtic squad for the game against St Johnstone.
A goal from Mika Baur was all that was needed to seal all three points for Martin O'Neill's side. And while it was not the outstanding display that the fans would have been hoping for in order to build momentum for the game against the Rangers at the weekend, sometimes, it is also about just getting the job done.
Anyways, there were some worries that emerged tonight. One of them has to be the status of Cameron Carter-Vickers, who was completely left out of the playing squad.
Obviously, that has raised worries about his situation. Carter-Vickers is someone who has a long history of injury problems, after all.
Why was Carter-Vickers completely absent from Celtic squad vs St Johnstone?
O'Neill has confirmed the reason behind dropping Carter-Vickers against St Johnstone. And it appears to have had more to do with fatigue than with any kind of injury.
O'Neill said, when asked about Carter-Vickers and whether his absence was precautionary on BBC Sport: "Absolutely.
“I thought there was, just in terms of energy and things like this here, I thought the last stages of the game on Saturday night, I thought he was wilting.
“He’s just feeling a little bit sore, I must admit, which is no surprise."
Well, that is a positive. One would imagine that he should be refreshed in time to take on the Rangers at the weekend. After all, it is just the beginning of the season.
Celtic did well even without Carter-Vickers in defence
Another thing that needs to be pointed out is that Celtic were able to keep a clean sheet even without Carter-Vickers playing.
Of course, I am not saying that they should continue with this lineup as a result. But it does go to show that they have some depth to deal with emergency situations.
Dane Murray is someone who has been on the receiving end of a ton of criticism lately. And one can understand why, based on his display in that second leg against LASK.
That being said, on this occasion, Murray barely put a foot wrong. And while he might be nowhere near being the regular starter, it was a reminder that he can be relied upon if the situation calls for it. Hopefully, that won't be often.
Celtic are now heading towards one of the most important periods of the campaign. They will travel to Ibrox to take on the Rangers this weekend in the League Cup quarter-final.
That will be followed up by the Europa League opener against Ferencvaros and then another Glasgow Derby, this time in the league and at Celtic Park.
So, they will want Carter-Vickers to be available and fully fit for these games. Let's see if that turns out to be the case or not.
