The Father of a player currently playing in the Italian Serie A has made an honest claim that his son would be willing to sign for Rangers if a deal came up.
Last month, we aggregated quotes of an interview from Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson with Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport, where he confessed his love for Rangers and that he wants to play for the club at some stage of his career.
Well, could that day come quicker than expected? Ferguson’s Dad has been on record saying that his son has spoken to Rangers, and would be open to joining: "Aye [Ferguson spoke to Rangers], there was a conversation going on there, but I don't think there was a bid.
That's what I'm aware of. But he was willing to come. There you go. That's what I'm saying." Then when asked if "Everything was agreed" for him to join), his old man responded: "Listen, I don't know all the ins and outs, because you know, I've said before - he's a big boy, he deals with things himself. He comes to me at times."
Very interesting indeed. In the aforementioned interview, Ferguson didn’t sound too enthusiastic about signing a new contract. Aside from the generic “I’m just thinking about my football” etc he also said that later on “if there’s something to discuss” he would - perhaps implying he thinks there won’t be (regarding a potential new deal at the club).
Still, surely this would be too expensive an operation for Rangers right at this moment in time. He currently has two years left on his Bologna deal, so they don’t feel the pressure to sell this window. Next summer - and maybe even next winter - is a different equation. But for now, there is unlikely to be any rush from their point of view.
Although he has been a very important player for the Serie A outfit over the past few years, he was stripped of the captaincy this summer, which must have hurt. That said, he did play 90 minutes against Lazio on Monday, so he does remain an important player for them.
Ah well, let’s see. No doubt about it, this would be an amazing signing if the club could pull it off. A lot will probably depend on what happens with Nicolas Raskin, both financially and in terms of what is needed in the middle of the park.
It's always good to sign any top player, but especially one who is homegrown, from Glasgow and a genuine fan of the club. There is something special about such a case.
