Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard hails veteran free agent Ryan Jack as a "proper player" as the midfielder returns to Glasgow to maintain fitness amid swirling transfer speculation.
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard expressed his admiration and respect for former Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack in a latest Instagram post. He commented, "Put him in the middle. Proper player", in a post which reported on the news that the free agent has been training at Rangers' facilities to stay fit while searching for a new club.
The 34-year-old midfielder won a title with Rangers when Gerrard was the head coach, and was previously managed by the current Gers boss, Derek McInnes at Aberdeen. Jack made over 200 appearances for Rangers during his seven-year spell at the club, including 131 Scottish Premiership matches, while scoring 12 goals overall throughout his stay.
Following the expiration of his contract with Turkish side Esenler Erokspor, he returned to Glasgow to focus on personal training supported by the Rangers' performance analysts and physios. In an earlier report on Roundtable, it was revealed that Jack is working on his fitness before finding a new club as a free agent. “I am just into the Rangers training ground working away with the physio and performance staff and also doing some gym work, so yeah, feeling good," said the Aberdeen youth academy graduate.
Gerrard's comment shows how much respect he has for Jack, who remains committed to continuing his career. It is a huge ask for Rangers to actually make him a permanent signing since the midfield department is well stacked, and they are having to let go of young players on loan spells elsewhere. Unless the club faces an unprecedented injury crisis in the engine room, there is no reason for them to make another addition to the area.
Meanwhile, in other news, Rangers have initiated contact with Premier League giants Arsenal to assess a loan deal for teenage sensation Max Dowman. Old Firm rivals Celtic have also put themselves in the mix by sending their own inquiries for the winger. The Chelmsford-born man is looking for regular minutes after his first-team breakthrough last season with the Gunners. Despite his rise at such a young age, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has reportedly told him that he will not be getting regular minutes at the club this season and must find space to develop elsewhere.
Rangers are expecting to pitch the route of Mikey Moore from Tottenham Hotspur, who found regular playing time at the club last campaign on a season-long loan spell. Dowman could follow suit, but it will be tough competition since several Championship sides are also interested.
