According to reports in the media on Monday afternoon (The 17th of August 2026), Rangers have seen a bid for a young Premier League player turned down.
The most vanilla take you could have on Rangers' current situation is that they need new signings through the door, and they need new signings through the door fast.
Yesterday's win over defending Champions St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup was the first win of the Derek McInnes era, at the fifth time of asking. The first four games had seen the team dumped out of the Europa League qualifying stage, and five points adrift of Celtic (and ironically St.Mirren) in the Scottish Premiership.
Earlier on today, we aggregated the news that Lewis Ferguson had told Italian media that he dreamt of playing for Rangers one day, and would be sure to make it happen one day, so long as the opportunity presented itself.
However, that signing is for another day. The focus is on the here and now, and who Rangers can bring in in the next two weeks or so.
Well, it does not look like it is for the want of trying. Earlier on today (Monday the 17th of August), Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the news that Rangers had seen a second bid of £7m for Brighton and Hove Albion winger, Amario Cozier-Duberry knocked back by the South Coast club.
Last season, whilst on loan at League One side Bolton Wanderers, the youngster scored eight goals and provided 10 assists in 34 regular season league games (30 starts), before helping the team get promoted via the play-offs, scoring the winner in their semi final first leg at home to Bradford City.
The 21-year old featured in Brighton's pre-season win over AS Roma, before being an unused sub last time out against Bologna. The five minutes he played against Roma was his only appearance in pre-season, implying that he is not in the manager's plans.
Maybe they would prefer him to go out on loan again, though he has now had two loans and is 21, so how much that would do for his development at this stage remains to be seen. There is no doubt that he would be a very good signing. Rangers needed wingers even when Oliver Antman was still at the club, never mind now he has departed. This is the exact sort of player that should be targeted.
Let's see what happens, maybe the club will go in with an improved bid. It is encouraging to see this level of ambition, but it's got to count for something in the end. Fingers crossed.
