"I have nothing but respect for him" - in a recent interview with Si Ferry's Open Goal podcast, Rangers legend Steven Gerrard has backed current boss Derek McInnes to be a success at Ibrox.

After a very tough start to life at Rangers, Derek McInnes appears to be steadying the ship at Ibrox.

The team have won six straight games, with the most recent two of those being Old Firms - one at home in the League Cup, and one away from home in the league - which will certainly go along way to trying the win the fans over.

There is now a hope and anticipation that the former Aberdeen boss could become a success at Rangers, and one former manager certainly thinks so. Indeed so, as Steven Gerrard has recently given his backing to McInnes.

Speaking to the Open Goal podcast the 46-year old said: "Who knows [if I will ever return]. What I would say is, I've been reluctant to come up [to Ibrox] for a certain amount of time, and sit in the box with a suit on and blah blah, because I don't want to disrespect any manager that is in position.

I've got nothing but respect for Derek McInnes. He was one of the toughest challenges for us as a group of staff when he was at Aberdeen. I hope he does well. I hope the club goes on and be successful where they [then] maybe don't need to come and ask someone like me [to be the manager]."

The former Liverpool midfielder continued: "I follow Rangers, I follow the results. I love the club. I want Derek McInnes to be successful. I've got nothing but respect for him.

And I loved yesterday at the game. I went in the box speaking to Andy [Halliday] and Scott [Arfield]. Just watching another Old Firm. See driving up to the stadium, the scarves and being back in Ibrox and that, it was some buzz."

Some very classy comments from Gerrard. He essentially implies what many already suspected when he said "Maybe they don't need to come and ask someone like me" - that he has been in talks with the club during one of the recent vacancies.

He went onto say that, whilst he has had offers since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, he is currently happy with his media work at TNT Sports, and has recently signed a new contract with the broadcasters. Well, as touched on earlier, things do seem to be going well for McInnes after the brutal start to life in Glasgow. Long may that continue.
