With the Scottish international intending to complete his dream move to Ibrox, Rangers may already be ahead of the competition to sign the midfielder next summer.

After back-to-back disappointing campaigns, Rangers left no stone unturned during the summer transfer window.

The Gers brought in a total of 14 new reinforcements this summer, along with new manager Derek McInnes, to end their two-season-long trophy drought.

However, the Light Blues are still working in the background to further strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.

Despite the recent run of good form, midfield is one area that the Gers might need to reevaluate during the upcoming transfer windows, as Nicolas Raskin's imminent Ibrox departure still looms large.

As it seems, Rangers already have their sights on Raskin's probable replacement in the form of Lewis Ferguson.

According to a recent report from Pete O'Rourke on Football Insider, it is unlikely for the Gers to pursue a move for the Scottish midfielder during the winter transfer window as he is currently a key figure for Bologna, being their captain and a regular starter for his side.

However, the scenario might change next summer as Ferguson's contract is set to expire in 2028 and the 27-year-old has also spelt out his desire to play for the Teddy Bears at some point in his career.

The central midfielder has already established himself at Bologna, getting the captain's armband in just a year since his move from Aberdeen back in 2022.

Ferguson has also racked up a total of 15 goals and six assists in all competitions for his current club and has also acquired the experience of leading his side in European competitions over the years.

The 27-year-old has also solidified his position in his national side. Ferguson played through every single minute of Scotland's campaign in this year's edition of the World Cup.

O'Rourke's recent report might come as a positive update for the Gers, who are seemingly hopeful of bringing in another midfielder from the Ferguson family, following in the footsteps of Lewis’s father, Derek, and his uncle, Barry.

But the estimated transfer fee of £17 million could stand as a major hurdle in the Gers' quest to bring in Ferguson to his dream destination.

The fans are also seemingly sceptical regarding the probable move next summer, but with Raskin already having made up his mind, the Light Blues are undoubtedly short of options.

Ferguson certainly has the quality to hold the Gers' midfield together and also play the leadership role in the dressing room.

And with the player intending to complete his dream move to Ibrox, Rangers may already be ahead of the competition to sign the midfielder next summer.
