Olympiacos have snatched Stefan Ortega from under Arsenal's nose, flying the former Manchester City goalkeeper to Athens to finalise a high-profile free transfer.
Greek Super League side Olympiacos have agreed on personal terms with Arsenal-linked goalkeeper Stefan Ortega for a summer transfer.
Florian Plettenberg revealed in his latest update that former Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has reached an agreement with Olympiacos for a free transfer ahead of the new season.
The 33-year-old has travelled to Piraeus with his agent Jörg Neblung to complete the final formalities of the deal before being announced as a new Red and Whites player. Ortega is set to be Olympiacos' replacement for the outgoing Konstantinos Tzolakis, who is awaiting an imminent transfer to newly promoted Premier League side Hull City, as an agreement on the fee is yet to be reached.
Medical examinations for the Arminia Bielefeld academy graduate will be scheduled as soon as he lands in Athens. This confirms that Olympiacos have successfully beaten off Arsenal in the negotiations to sign Ortega. According to an earlier report on Roundtable, the Gunners were interested in acquiring his services to serve as a direct backup to first-choice goalkeeper David Raya. Second-choice man Kepa Arrizabalaga is expected to leave the club this summer for better game time elsewhere, triggering Arsenal to add Ortega as part of their transfer window shopping list.
Ortega's arrival would also put rest to the earlier rumours linking head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar's team with Paraguayan star goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who earned fame after helping his country beat Germany in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.
The Red and Whites face Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in August, and the German goalkeeper will be ready to start in the contest if "everything goes according to plan with his registration," reports Florian Plettenberg.
Ortega played in the Germany till 2022, featuring for 1860 Munich and Arminia Bielefeld, before joining Manchester City, where he was the backup option for Ederson during majority of his stay. He went on to sign a short-term contract for Marinakis Football Group owned Nottingham Forest in January. He became a free agent in June.
In other news, Olympiacos are competing with EFL Championship side West Ham for the signature of Gustavo Sá. The Greek giants have emerged as the frontrunners in the race, but pressure from England remains high. O Jogo reported that the Hammers reached an agreement with Famalicao on a 20 million euros deal to sign the midfielder; however, the player is set to make a call on his future.
