Premier League outfit Leeds United could be tempted to recruit Olympiacos' Konstantinos Tzolakis after Newcastle United decided to retain Nick Pope.
According to a report by The Leeds Press, Leeds United have begun preparing for the new season after securing survival in the English top flight with a 14th-placed finish. However, they are set to lose the services of goalkeepers Karl Darlow, Alex Cairns, and Illan Meslier when their contracts expire at the end of this month.
This situation has forced the Elland Road dwellers' hand, prompting them to look elsewhere in the transfer market for a reliable goalie. A revisit of Olympiacos shot stopper Konstantinos Tzolakis is now firmly on the cards for Leeds United.
As previously revealed by Roundtable last month, several European clubs, including The Whites, were interested in Thrylos' Tzolakis. However, the Greek giants received no offer from the side, and therefore, the 23-year-old remains an integral part of Jose Luis Mendilibar's squad for the new season.
The Chania-born goalkeeper worked his way to become one of the Spanish boss's trusted men on the pitch since winning the UEFA Conference League two years back. It is certain that Tzolakis' consistent performances in the Greek top flight have raised interest among English internal scouting reports.
As for Leeds United's present situation, chairman Paraag Marathe has reiterated his commitment to the fans to build a better squad for the upcoming Premier League campaign after the World Cup. He has already managed to pen midfielder Ethan Ampadu down to a new deal, thus resolving one of the biggest contract issues in their team.
Darlow's contract was expected to be renewed in the last few days, but his future at the club is becoming increasingly uncertain. The West Yorkshire side looked forward to making contact with Newcastle United's Nick Pope following the Magpies' announcement of Stade Reims keeper Ewen Jaouen on a permanent transfer as he completes his medical examinations.
Leeds initially thought that the Frenchman's imminent signing would displace Pope from the squad. However, Newcastle, led by head coach Eddie Howe and his assistant Jason Tindall, has asked the Ipswich Town academy graduate to report for the Tyneside club's pre-season duties.
While the 34-year-old's future still remains unclear, Leeds United cannot afford to wait; otherwise, they might even lose Tzolakis to a competitor club.
Hull City have also registered a strong interest in the young Greek keeper after sealing promotion to the Premier League.
