Following Armando González’s high-profile arrival from Chivas de Guadalajara, Olympiacos have set their sights on West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez to bolster their engine room for the upcoming campaign.
After sealing the signature of former Chivas de Guadalajara man Armando Gonzalez, Olympiacos have the Mexican National Team captain Edson Alvarez in their radar for a potential transfer this summer.
According to an update by Greek media outlet Sportdog.gr, West Ham United defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez is linked with a move to Olympiacos.
The Red and Whites made a terrific mark in their transfer window by bringing Armando 'La Hormiga' Gonzalez from Mexican outfit Chivas on a $13 million deal, including bonuses, while giving his previous team a rumoured 20% future resale value. The 23-year-old was officially announced by Olympiacos yesterday, and he was quick to deliver his commitment to the club in his first interview. "Very happy, very glad to be here. Very grateful to the president for giving me this opportunity to come play for a very important club, and very grateful for everything he did to bring me here," remarked Gonzalez, as covered by Roundtable.
It remains to be seen how the Alvarez case pans out for Thrylos. The reports can be considered in the preliminary stages, as Olympiacos have not initiated any kind of official contact with West Ham United for the player's services.
The Tlalnepantla de Baz-born man graduated from the youth ranks of Club America, and then transferred to Eredivisie giants Ajax on a €15 million move in 2019. After making over 140 appearances for Ajax across all competitions while netting 13 times and registering six assists, he caught the attention of the then Premier League side West Ham in 2023, which signed him for €38 million.
Alvarez captains the Mexican team, having started 103 times and scoring seven goals in his international career. He has won three Gold Cups and the CONCACAF Nations League with El Tri.
The 28-year-old was loaned out to Turkish top-flight outfit Fenerbahce, but soon was dealt with an injury and missed most of the campaign.
Alvarez is considered an option for the midfield for Olympiacos as of now. The Greek giants have been looking for a reliable engine room reinforcement for quite some time, and their search suffered a blow when Toulouse midfielder Cristian Casseres Jr. rejected a move to the club even after an agreement was reached between the two sides.
The Piraeus club is already eyeing a potential transfer for Genoa's Morten Frendrup. Although the Dane is expensive compared to the likes of Sporting CP's Daniel Braganca and Real Racing Club's Gustavo Puerta, he has proven himself in Serie A over the past few seasons.
