Jose Luis Mendilibar targets Genoa’s Danish dynamo Morten Frendrup to reinforce the Olympiacos midfield. Still, a hefty price tag and fierce continental competition from Besiktas, AS Roma, and Real Betis stand in the way.

Greek Super League side Olympiacos are set to battle European giants for Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup.

According to an update on TransferFeed, Genoa's Morten Frendrup has caught the attention of Olympiacos head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, as Thrylos now probe a move for the midfielder.

The Dane signed from the Denmark top division side Brøndby IF on a €4.4 million deal n the winter transfer window of 2022. Since then, Frendrup has been a regular name on the starting eleven for Serie A side Genoa, featuring in over 150+ appearances while netting seven times across all competitions.

After losing out on Toulouse man Cristian Casseres Jr., who reportedly rejected a move to Olympiacos despite agreements on a transfer fee between the clubs, the Red and Whites are adamant on bringing a new midfield reinforcement. Negotiations had already begun with Sporting CP for Daniel Bragança and newly promoted LaLiga side Racing de Santander for Gustavo Puerta over a possible transfer this summer. However, both talks were stalled due to the Casseres deal.

We can expect Olympiacos to restart their efforts on several other fronts for a new midfielder. Frendrup is another name on the list, but is considered a strong market opportunity for the club.

The 25-year-old is a rather expensive option for the Piraeus club since he would cost over €15 million in fees and additional bonuses. The player has been quoted by Besiktas, AS Roma and Real Betis, so a rise in market value should be normal. Olympiacos were ready to bet €10 million+ to land the services of Casseres, and they would hope to spend a similar amount without breaking the bank to buy a new engine room maestro.

Despite his high price tag, Frendrup could be a much better upgrade in the defensive midfield area than Santiago Hezze, who is edging towards an exit.

Elsewhere, Olympiacos are considering a €10 million permanent move for Ilan Kebbal from Ligue 1 side Paris FC. The Algerian international will not be taking up a non-EU spot at the club, as he holds a French passport. Kebbal has been featuring regularly as an attacking midfielder and winger for the Paris-based club, and he could prove to be a budget option to aid in attack. Last season, he made 29 appearances, scoring 9 goals and registering 4 assists. Kebbal also has four caps with his national team.

We will keep updating this space when more news regarding the two arrives.
