Olympiacos face a strategic battle for OFI Crete's Nikolaos Christogeorgos, as a complex resale clause grants fierce rivals Panathinaikos the power to hijack the deal.
According to an update by TransferFeed, Olympiacos have eyed a potential winter transfer move for OFI Crete goalkeeper Nikolaos Christogeorgos. The Red and Whites materialised a remarkable sale for their youth academy product and a key figure behind the UEFA Europa Conference League triumph, Konstantinos Tzolakis, to Hull City this summer.
While Stefan Ortega was signed on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Premier League side Nottingham Forest to replace Tzolakis, it seems that the club is still searching for a long-term solution for the goalkeeping department. This is the reason why the name of Christogeorgos has surfaced in recent times.
Olympiacos president Evangelos Marinakis has conveyed to head coach Imanol Alguacil that the side remains financially capable of bringing in new players to bolster several other positions. He also offered to invest in free agents since the Hellenic Football Federation allow clubs to register out-of-contract players until 29 September. However, Alguacil is yet to come up with a transfer plan for new faces.
Christogeorgos is owned by OFI, and any official transfer move will have to wait until the January window. Thrylos are confident of making initial advances, as they have the resources to bring the Greek goalkeeper to the club. However, the negotiations are not expected to be straightforward, as the Piraeus-based outfit must take into consideration a clause in the player's contract, which could alter his future destination.
What's the catch with Nikolaos Christogeorgos's potential signing?
Olympiacos understand Christogeorgos's market value and are ready to match OFI's asking price. However, when the Cretan side acquired him from Panathinaikos B, the club held a 25-30% future resale rights along with the right to match any offer from other clubs in the possibility of an imminent sale to bring him back to Panathinaikos.
For this reason, Olympiacos could wait until the summer of 2027, keeping Ortega as their first-choice goalie with Balsa Popovic ready to deputise at any opportunity. Therefore, a formal proposal is expected to come next year, and negotiations could begin in the winter window to assess his value.
The next few months are crucial to this transfer as this could well become a transfer battle between two rivals. It remains to be seen whether Panathinaikos lets go of one of their youth academy graduates to direct rivals, Olympiacos. Marinakis is aware of this scenario, and he is welcoming the challenge to beat their nearest rivals to the goalkeeper.
Christogeorgos played for Panathinaikos between 2018 and 2023, spending 2021-2023 for their B team. Since joining OFI on 31 January 2026, he has made over 60 appearances for the club.
