Olympiacos eye a bold swoop for free agent Raphael Guerreiro, battling AS Roma for the former Bayern Munich left-back to bolster their versatile defensive options.
According to a report by Tutto Mercato Web via Sport24.gr, Olympiacos have set their sights on signing free agent Raphael Guerreiro, who has been searching for a new club since his contract with Bayern Munich expired.
The SM Caen youth academy graduate made 18 Bundesliga appearances last season with Bayern, scoring five goals and assisting twice. On 30 June 2026, the day he left the Bavarian side, he concluded his three-year stay at the home of the record German top-flight champions. He joined Bayern from rivals Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023 after spending seven years at the Ruhr-based side, making 162 appearances and finding the net 30 times.
Reports from Italy claimed that AS Roma are interested in acquiring the player's services as he is available on a free transfer. However, Olympiacos remain firmly in the mix to launch an offer to Guerreiro for consideration.
The 32-year-old left-back came through the elite French Football academy of INF Clairefontaine before joining Caen and then making over 100 appearances for Lorient. Portuguese coach Rui Borges spotted him in 2013, and the player was quick to answer the call to represent Portugal on the international stage in his career. He made his debut in a Portugal U21 match against Sweden on 21 March 2013. With the senior team, he was part of their historic EURO 2016-winning squad and the 2019 Nations League.
Olympiacos president Evangelos Marinakis has already indicated to head coach Imanol Alguacil that the club has funds to materialise another transfer, especially if the Basque manager is looking for another wing reinforcement. He is quite versatile in his natural playing position at left-back, often overlapping with the winger upfront, providing attacking width. He can also feature in the midfield with a defensive mind, making good use of his line to move the ball forward and help in build-up play.
Meanwhile, in other news, Olympiacos have also former Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha under their scanner. The Hellenic Football Federation has a deadline of 29 September for clubs to complete any free agent dealings, and therefore, the Red and Whites are exploring options to invest on in a season, where they will be challenging for a piece of European silverware while balancing domestic competitions.
Zaha's contract with Galatasaray expired this summer as he spent the last season on loan at MLS side Charlotte FC. Despite these rumours, it is entirely up to Alguacil to decide on whether he can accomodate another winger in his ranks or he stays content with the likes of Gelson Martins, Joel Roca, Gustavo Sa and Jota Silva.
