RC Lens' interest in Olympiacos defender Giulian Biancone is on hold as the club waits to appoint its new coach. No deal will be signed without the green light from the new boss.
Giulian Biancone remains high on RC Lens' list of options to strengthen their defensive line, according to French reports. The Olympiacos stopper is rated positively by the club's people, as he has experience from both Ligue 1 and European competitions.
The rumor linking Biancone to Lens, which began last week and was heavily promoted by the Greek press, continues to gain momentum. Looking to bolster their defense for next season, the Lens management has targeted the 26-year-old.
A product of AS Monaco's youth academy, the Frenchman presents an interesting profile for the Sang et Or, as he is capable of playing both in central defense and on the right flank. He is intimately familiar with the demands of Ligue 1 thanks to his time at Monaco and Troyes.
After stints at Club Brugge and Nottingham Forest, he gained valuable European experience this season with Olympiacos. The defender played 27 matches for the Piraeus-based club, including seven Champions League games against giants like Arsenal and Real Madrid.
However, his status does not guarantee him a starting position at the Greek club. Having started less than half of last season's matches, the player is understandably considering the next step in his career.
Under contract with the Greek club until June 2027, and with the club not standing in his way should a good offer come in, he is extremely open to the idea of taking on a new challenge in France.
While the Greek media went into overdrive on Sunday, claiming that the deal with the Artois club was already finalized, the reality on the ground is somewhat different.
Lens' interest is very real, and the former Monaco player's profile had indeed been approved by the previous coaching staff. Nevertheless, according to Foot Mercato, the French club management has decided to proceed cautiously by temporarily putting the matter on hold.
Before finalizing any signings, Lens's top priority is to officially announce its new coach's appointment. The transfer of Biancone, therefore, remains on track and is progressing positively, but no signature will be signed without the essential green light from the new boss of the northern bench.
Meanwhile, Olympiacos is focused on reinforcing several positions in its defense, including the full-back spots. Recently, the Greek giants received a big boost when one of the players linked to the club, Dimitris Giannoulis (Augsburg), rejected a Premier League move amid interest from Coventry City and Hull City. According to what we know, the left-back prefers to return to Greece.
