Could A'ja Wilson win MVP and DPOY this year?
ESPN believes Las Vegas Aces superstar A'ja Wilson is the frontrunner to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year this season.
Wilson won MVP and Defensive Player of the Year last season. She's a four-time MVP and three-time Defensive Player of the Year.
As of this writing, Wilson is averaging 26.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per game on the season while shooting 53.7% from the field, 44.6% from beyond the arc and 84.9% from the free-throw line. The future Hall of Famer has 15 double-doubles in 28 games.
Wilson leads the WNBA in points, points per game, blocks per game, field goals, player efficiency rating, win shares, offensive win shares and defensive win shares. The eight-time All-Star is undoubtedly the best player in the league right now.
Behind Wilson, the Aces are 21-9. They are looking to win their fourth championship in franchise history and fourth ring in five years.
When it's all said and done, Wilson may go down as the greatest player in WNBA history. At All-Star weekend, she told ESPN that she's "been the goat since '96," the year she was born. Wilson has already accomplished so much before her 30th birthday, which is coming up (8/8).
A two-time scoring champion and two-time Finals MVP, Wilson just won her 31st career Western Conference Player of the Week honor. She owns the most weekly honors on Western Conference history and trails only Tina Charles, who is a 33-time WNBA Player of the Week awardee.
It will be fascinating to see if Wilson wins MVP and Defensive Player of the Year again. Knowing her, she only cares about winning another championship.
"The career, the journey that I've been on, it's been so blessed," Wilson told ESPN at All-Star weekend in Chicago. "Like, it's just been overjoyed with so much love that I receive. It's been so special. So I'm grateful. If I'm the GOAT, cool."
Wilson holds career averages of 21.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.0 blocks per game in the regular season and 21.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.2 blocks per game in the playoffs.
