Flick Chat and News I just watched the 3rd episode of the newest Dr Who, and i'm so glad I persevered with it, because the first 2 episodes were quite disappointing, especially the first.. but the third..🙌 it hit the spot. It's one of the better episodes i've seen in a long time!
I only started watching Dr Who back when Matt Smith became Dr, but didn't see much of the last season and didn't feel like I was missing much from what I did see 😬
Anyway, the 3rd episode had a much stronger storyline and did much more to build on and develop the relationship between the Dr and his new partner Ruby Sunday. Almost all of the episode centered on the Dr standing on a land mine waiting on it's explosion, in a war torn future planet.
The episode covered really relevant themes like the use of AI and algorithms in warfare and modern warfare in general, which is of course very much my interest. The Anglicans (lol!) it turned out were waging a war against no one, on an uninhabited planet, symbolising the pointlesness of war, except for it's purposes of making money and benefitting a few select people. AI and algorithms would ensure just enough were dying to keep the war going, and keep the arms companies making money.
Although the BBC is very flawed and very woke, I thought this was quite a brave theme to tackle in Dr Who and a subtle way of making some points about using your critical thinking about conflicts.
Religion also featured and the concept that faith "keeps you thinking for yourself", was really well done in a way that opened the door for various conversations applying to those of many faiths. I also thought it oddly touching and spiritual rather than solely religious, when a young girl's father was killed and she remarked, "he's not gone, he's just dead" 🖤
Let me know if any of you are fans or have seen and enjoyed this episode. May 25, 2024
Flick Chat and News
Flick Chat and News I just finished watching The Dropout, a mini series portraying the case of Elizabeth Holmes and her biotech company called Theramos.
Spoilers to follow
I didn't know ANYTHING about this story when I started watching this, and to be honest the first few episodes bored me rather.. 🤭 But, by the last 3 episodes I was hooked and desperate to find out what happened.
In the end she is serving 11+ years for her fraud. The bigger question though for me, is whether she was actually a kind of psychopath!
The series does allude to this a lot.. she has a breakdown and then uses different voices. She is also presented as cold, caluculated, manipulative..
The clip I shared is from the final episode and sums up a lot of it.
"You told me to just put it away and forget it... if you choose to forget certain things, do you think that is lying?"
At first I thought it's a complex question, but actually it's very simple. And, in fact, we see so much of this in life and specifically in politics and law, of how people can just avoid lying now. The series depicted Holmes' trial and of course many of her answers are vague "I don't remember, I don't recall specifics" etc
By now in life, you can tell the person in the wrong more by how they avoid questions instead of lying. It was the same when the NY times repeatedly told her team of lawyers that if they had nothing to hide they should "just answer the questions".
I wonder even if you haven't seen this, what do you think of these ideas?
I'd give the series a solid 8/10, I really enjoyed the intense psychological moments, and the crazy relationships she had with people, but especially with Sunny, who actually I think was played much better and was my favourite character. Apr 11, 2024
Flick Chat and News Hey everyone, here is a short video with some of my personal lows from the Oscars this year 🤪😆
1. Gosling's terrible song from Barbie, with a bunch of Kens, as if 1 wasn't bad enough. It made me sick in my mouth a little ngl.
2. Billie Eilish having acting like she had never sang What Was I Made For before, and a bunch of women celebrities acting like they were so impacted by it, and that it was an historic Feminist moment. 🤢 Yeah Billie, we know the fucking song, you can all give it a rest now 🫡
3. Jimmy Kimmel complaining that Greta Gerwig should have won best director, when everyone else knows that Nolan deserved every inch of that award for Oppenheimer.
4. John Cena presenting the award for best costume design naked 👀 okay, maybe a low, maybe a high, you choose 🤪
5. A nod to the genocide in Gaza 💔 some clips of celebs who wore badges in support of a ceasefire, as well as those (Jewish prize winners) who denounced the Israeli Occupation of Palestine, and some clips of the related protests outside the Oscars which called for a Free Palestine and No Oscars during a genocide.
Let me know what was your least favourite part of the Oscars! Which result or moment disappointed or annoyed you the most? Mar 13, 2024
Flick Chat and News
Flick Chat and News I predict that for best original song in the 2024 Oscars, the winner will be
What was I made for, from Barbie.
I think this will be the winner for a few reasons:
1. Competition: The Ken song is absolutely terrible, why is it even there?! The Flower Moon song is very niche (though may be popular purely for points covered in point 3). The American Symphony is a nice and well composed song, but certainly not a banger and not musically appealing to a large audience. The Flamin' Hot song is, admittedly a bit of a banger, but, What was I made for ticks many more boxes because it appeals to quite a broad audience.
2. Choice of singer: So the audience base as mentioned for the song itself is even greater than the movie! Billie Eilish is a huge star who herself has a very large and diverse audience. She has a really beautiful voice and this song is a little different from much of her chart success in the UK. So the song itself would attract even those like myself who never watched the whole movie.😅 Lyrically, you can easily remove the concept of Barbie from the song and then it applies to anyone (even men 🤪) who have ever questioned their purpose in life, felt like they have lost their way, have felt used by someone else, doesn't know how to feel about their life, questions their relationships or even friendships, feels depressed, is waiting for life to begin or for the right person to come along, and many other relatable feelings.
"I think I forgot how to be happy, something i'm not, but something I can be, something I wait for.. something i'm made for".
3. Popular Woke Feminism. The song itself also attracts the Feminists and the Woke crowd who love to get on any gender bandwagon and politicise even the most basic boring shit. They love the song for how it presents all women as Barbie, wondering why they are here, if it is only to serve men or another purpose 🥱
"Just something you paid for.. what was I made for"
Of course these political ideologies are very popular in the West the past few years and it is seen especially with decisions elsewhere to remove even separate awards for me and woman 😅 (while also then complaining that only men won the non-gendered awards 🤣) which you would think goes against Feminism, but apparently doesn't, and in the trend to focus on more minorities in film such as female directors, and topics/actors from Western minority ethnicities. Therefore, anything related to Barbie is an easy vote winner when trying to appeal to these sorts of audiences and in making the film industry appear much more diverse, accessible and accomodating than it actually is.
4. Merit: All of these points make it sound like this song will win purely because it is a "good" choice to win, or really the only obvious choice. While I think that is true, I do actually like the song and think it is a good standalone song by Billie Eilish, and could (should) win on merit alone. Jan 26, 2024
Flick Chat and News
Flick Chat and News I don't know if this is really a fair review, considering I turned this movie off after a solid 30 minutes.. 🤣 but Belfast literally won Academy Awards and Baftas among others..🤔 since I turned it off I have googled a little and it seems like the story is going to pick up.. but I just feel so pissed off and disappointed that I wanted to give the honest review based on this initial experience. If I can ever grit my teeth hard enough to endure more of it, i'll update if my opinions change..
Anyway
If you don't know by now, i'm from Northern Ireland.. this movie is my history, my life, my heritage. I was born when the Troubles still raged, pre-peace process, and was raised in the thick of it I guess you could say, witnessing first and second hand violence and sectarianism. Inter-generational impacts still follow me around, and the long consequences of the conflict that still impact on society in various ways today. I'll be honest, i'm still salty about it all, like many of us, it's hard to "move on".
Belfast starts with some modern day iconic scenes of the city itself, and this really made me feel good and made me proud of my wee country. The opening scenes were accompanied by music by Van Morrison, and as soon as it started I said to my husband "Well, who else!". Van the Man is an iconic NI singer and musician, his career has spanned decades and his music has shaped generations. Like most my age, I can say "my dad was a huge fan of Van", and i'm no stranger to his music. For me, this was the only good to come from this movie 🤭🤷♀️
Here you can enjoy one of his classics, which apparently also features later in the movie.. though I never got so far..
Belfast begins with the forced displacement of Catholics from a Protestant area.. in reality it happened in mixed streets all over Belfast. Sometimes Catholics were displaced, other times the Protestants were displaced. Even this was quite a simplified and dull narrative, but the really disappointing thing to me was how inauthentic it all felt.
The set was so poor! The belfast streets LOOKED LIKE A MOVIE SET! It wasn't dirty or cold or wet, there was no impending doom or deprivation felt.. it just felt so fraudulent, clean and polite. The riot scenes (which would have originally occurred on Bombay Street) were laughable.. it was like "get out of your house you Catholic" when anyone here will know the derogatory abuse and true violence. I know there have to be limits to make the history palatable, but it just felt far too Hollywood, and completely lacking to me.
Soon after we see the young boys sent to church. The Protestant minister, supposed to show the early days of late Reverand Ian Paisley, but he did a piss poor job and it was much more like a Paisley skit than genuine acting. The "sweat" of him was so over the top, it was like he just finished running a marathon. Now, Presbyterian churches are very "hell and brimstone", but this was so over the top it was comical. Honestly, I laughed at how uneasy and bad it was! I'm not sure if it was intended as a form of satire, but even then it did a bad job.
Honestly so much of the first half hour I was just rolling my eyes or cringing. The accents weren't as bad as I expected but there were a few obvious mistakes that natives would have noticed. Nobody in the whole of Northern Ireland talks about "your Pa".. as their dad, it's "yer da", so I suppose they must have been some American actors..
And by then, I gave up watching. The movie wasn't entertaining or causing any learning or critical thought about the history, other than how bad the movie itself was. I do hope some day to watch more, but for now... my mama told me, there'd be days like this 😉Dec 23, 2023
Flick Chat and News There's a lot to pick apart in Get Out, and this will include spoilers, so if you haven't watched yet, come back when you have!
The opening scenes were very predictable and disappointing. As soon as the white car started to drive past, I knew what was going to happen.. I thought this movie was going to do better than just follow the standard racism narratives that are so familiar in the USA.
With relief, the movie used this scene, I think very cleverly, to make the audience feel tired with racism (that it is so prevalent in the US). I long for more nuance and discussion in the related narratives, and it seems from the UK at least that the Black Lives Matter movement was simply hijacked and has been since abandoned again. This movie came out 3 years before the murder of George Floyd and the biggest spike in BLM protests in the US and around Europe, but it had been brewing for decades and increasing in the years surrounding this film.
The convo about "do they know i'm black?" was so uncomfortable on both sides.. her justifications that they aren't rascist because they voted Obama.. his concerns he wants his skin colour to be seen. This narrative is such a common one in discussions on black/white violence and racism in the US. Later we can see how this whole conversation was a lure, that Rose pretended to be naeve that she hadn't even considered his skin colour or that her family would.
I think the film is trying to show that although you can say that you're not racist because you voted Obama, or you loved Tiger Woods like the old golf player, or you think black people are sexy or strong, that these things are inherently racist. I think Daily touched on this concept too in his post how people want a pat on the back for appearing not to be racist, like oh I voted for Obama. Okay, but did you vote for him because of his skin colour, and to make a gesture? Or did you vote for him because you believed in his ability to lead and in his politics? Because even if you think the first reason is good, it is still racist.
To be honest I wish the film unpicked this a little more.. but I liked how they alluded to the Holocaust by discussing the deer "like rats" and in fact even how the deer was used to explore racist language without directing it at Chris. That really fascinated me, especially seeing as dehumanising is so prevalent again but this time in the world we see Israel using it. I'm not sure how obvious it was to non-English speakers but they also threw in hints about White Privilege. It was interesting how they used animals or other topics to use dehumanising language thst is typically common in rascist language. You can say that racism was largely absent or not too offensive, but actually, it was throughout the whole movie and still as offensive, just placed subtly. Again this served (I think) to highlight our unconcious biases and how normalised racism actually is.
Speaking as a white person, I think the film did well to eat into insecurities about racism, constantly being aware and hypersensitive to the race and colour of others. It played right into the White Anxieties of trying not to say the wrong thing or appear to be a rascist, all the while, making race and colour all the more of a discriminator.. something so focussed on when we all know it shouldn't be. The first half of the movie was SO uncomfortable for me, constantly cringing and feeling like oh gosh I can't believe they said that..
Another example of course is that right after the white cop has been rude to Chris and demanded his ID even though he wasn't the one driving.. we see the house which is very Plantation Era, and then a black groundskeeper. It was so stereotypical and awkward for me, while serving a purpose in the theme of racism but also the greater plot of the movie.
Of course the difference between Rose saying her family isn't racist, and their words/actions becomes more and more obvious and her innocence begins to unravel.
Right from the first ding on the cup of tea, when they all sat outside, I knew what was coming with Chris being hypnotised, it was set up to condition him before he really was hypnotised. Right away I thought the brother must be either involved or maybe hypnotised too, as with the father. For some time actually I thought maybe just the mum was coherent and all of the rest were under her influence. But by the time Chris and Rose sat at the lake and she initially said she wouldn't leave, I knew she was also involved.
I really liked the scenes in the sunken place. Suddenly the housekeepers tears made sense! I liked that some of the feeling and interpretation was left to the audience, and I thought the actor who played Chris did especially well. (P.s. if you ever watched The West Wing, tell me the dad was not just an older Bradley! I mean, same actor but it was also just an older Bradley gone wrong 🤣).
One thing I didn't really understand was this point in the movie.. were they planning to transplant part of the other guy's brain in to Chris? I didn't understand because the groundskeeper and housekeeper just seemed void? So I assumed that was their plan for all of the victims.. but it seemed Chris was going to be used to serve as new eyes for the artist. I was really confused how he thought that was going to work for him.. that he would suddenly have a new body 🤔 would it not be easier to just do an eye transplant? 😅 maybe I missed something there, just the ideas seemed to not really make the best sense.
As for the ending of the movie, I think it was really great! I had an idea that it was going to end with the white cop coming and the old narrative being followed that the black guy will be punished for all of the murders and a misscarriage of justice. I was really delighted that it didn't end like that, and instead did something different. I think it gave Chris the justice he deserved and also gave a little hope to those dealing with racism or sick of the same experiences or narratives surrounding the topic.
On the whole, I liked the balance between horror and the theme of racism. It certainly wasn't terrifying, much more just a psychological thriller (which I love) with only a few minor jumps to keep you on edge. I also thought the music at the start and end was very fitting. I'd rate Get Out a solid 8/10 for blending well the theme with the genre, and engaging my brain along the way too. The racism was more blatant than I expected, but was done in a thought out way to be more palatable. Dec 12, 2023
Flick Chat and News I wanted to show this clip (watch from around 1:00) because I think it summarises a lot of the movie and themes without being too visually offensive.
Here is some of the text for those translating:
"Let me tell you something. . I’ve been a rich man, and I’ve been poor man. And I choose rich every fucking time. Cause, At least as a rich man, when I have to face my problems, I show up in the back of a limo wearing a $2000 suit …and $40,000 gold fuckin’ watch! Now, if anyone here thinks I’m superficial or materialistic. Go get a job at fucking McDonald’s, because that’s where you fucking belong! But, before you depart this room full of winners, I want you to take a good look at the person next to you, go on. Because sometime in the not-so-distant future, you’re pullin’ up to a red light in your beat-up old fucking Pinto, and that person’s gonna pull up right alongside you in a brand new Porsche, with their beautiful wife by his side, whose got big voluptuous tits. And who will you be next to? Some disgusting wilder beast with three days of razor-stubble in a sleeveless moo-moo, crammed in next to you with a carload full of groceries from the fucking Price Club! That’s who you’re gonna be sitting next to. So, you listen to me and you listen well. Are you behind, on your credit card bills? Good. Pick up the phone and start dialing. Is your landlord ready to evict you? Good. Pick up the phone and start dialing. Does your girlfriend think you’re a fucking loser? Good. Pick up the phone and start dialing! I want you to deal with your problems, by becoming rich! All you have to do today …is pick up that phone, and speak the words that I have taught you. And I’ll make you richer than the most powerful CEO of the United States of fucking America. I want you to go out there, and I want you to RAM Steve Madden stock down your clients’ throats. Till they fucking choke on it till they choke on it and buy 100,000 shares! That’s what I want you to do. You’ll be ferocious! You’ll be relentless! You’ll be telephone fucking terrorists! Now, let’s knock this Motherfucker out of the park!"
The wolf of wall street I think was aimed at bring a satirical parody of American corruption and greed in the stock exchange. It intends to show that greed and pursuit of money will lead to a cesspit of crime, drugs and questionable sexual behaviour. The movie does do this in some ways, but feels more like an excuse for Di Caprio and his Hollywood mates to show off the excessive and ridiculous lifestyles of the rich and famous, which is a little ironic and funny tbh.
For me, it missed the mark and irritated me more than anything. As Daily Update said, it really lacked any meaning and while I suppose that is the point; if you live a life like this, you will too lack meaning, it is an exaggerated and patronising message. In fact there are many famous and wealthy people who are disgustingly rich and also are kind, generous and live satisfying, honest, and meaningful lives.
The movie tries to say don't aim for money and success it will only lead to disgusting behaviour, and yet everyone making the movie is in this position, happy or not. I feel like they unintentionally made a mockery of themselves while also giving no nuance. You can compare it to The Pursuit of Happiness and see how someone from dire poverty lived an honest and meaningful life through getting a job in the stock exchange, and more importantly, both are true stories.
I also think the movie aimed to show some social mobility to "poor people" but failed miserably. The Wolf says he lived poor and rich and he chose rich. So all of us here who aren't wealthy, let it be a fucking lesson that we just aren't making good choices in life. 😭 It's our fault if we're dirt poor, and certainly not because it suits governments and societies for there to be poor people.👀
We all know on BBS in similar circumstances how the crypto world is quite similar to wall street. Of course there are successs and morally deficient people, but there are also many people just seeking out enough money to have a decent life, and do it with a moral compass.
Social mobility in many places is harder and harder to achieve, at least in my experience it is largely dead in the UK despite the dreams some in power will tell you to keep you trying to drag your ass into a shit job every day in hope of promotion, or spending thousands on a degree you'll never use anyway.
The wolf of wall street shows (but doesn't address) what we all know to be true in stock markets and crypto, that luck is a huge factor and typically those making the most success were already fortunate to begin with. Money makes money. And of course we all know how easy it is for people with massive wealth to sit in their fast cars and mansions and tell you not to be greedy.
In conclusion, for me the movie tried to discourage poor people from wanting financial successes while in turn glorifying it because the Wolf himself faced no true consequences for all he did wrong. All the while, it suggested that money is bad and that if you are sat home watching and dreaming of the day you make your own success that it will leave you morally corrupt too.. while being produced and acted in by massively wealthy people.. is it just me? It really was quite confusing to me and quickly became quite repetative and boring despite all of their excessive swearing and dramatic scenes. 🥱Nov 21, 2023
Flick Chat and News It took me quite a while to get this post done because every time I started watching clips I just lost it all over again😔 It's a long video I made, i'm not sorry 😅I didn't expect to be so upset over the death of someone I never met, but the truth is, if you're a big fan of friends, it wasn't just a TV show, these guys really felt like your friends.
Matthew Perry died far too young, probably related to his long, open and well documented history with addiction. He never shyed away from sharing his story and trying to help others through it too. He had an incredible talent not just as an actor but in always making people laugh.
Matthew Perry played Chandler Bing, the sarcastic funny guy in Friends. So many of the funniest moments in Friends was down to his comments and his storylines. His line "and I just want a million dollars!" is one of his most famous and set his character up in the first episode. For me, that clip is what I think of as THE start of Friends, it just sums up so much.
Second clip is with the infamous Janice. Chandler and her had a long on and off suffering relationship, she showed all of his flaws and inability to commit to women or have a steady relationship. Lots of really funny moments happened with Janice in the first few seasons.
The third clip is just an ode to the Joey and Chandler relationship🥰 Then just some iconic funny Chandler moments. In every episode the was something from him that just really made you laugh. So often his one liners summarised much of the episode.
Joey and Chandler's chairs! So many good memories those guys had in the old chairs and then these new ones. One episode was filmed with them entirely in the chairs too! So many great Friends laughs here.
Of course I included my all time favourite scene where Ross bursts into the room not knowing his sister Monica is there and she and Chandler had hooked up the previous night. I was SHELL SHOCKED at this. It was such a pivitol moment for Friends, and for Chandler's character to finally fall in love! And damn it was so funny too. Followed by Chandler saying for the first time that he loves Monica, something he never said to a woman before. Their wedding which just epitomises the growth of Chandler's character from the start of Friends where he couldn't keep a girlfriend to now, committing and finally being in love with his best friend. He was no longer just the funny guy but had shown his love, strength, committment and loyalty. His was one of the deepest and most developed characters in Friends.
After later finding out they cannot conceive, they are able to adopt a baby and it's surprise twin too. All these scenes were such huge moments, I guess if you don't know them you might not realise how huge they were. And this is how the final episode of the 10 seasons end, really with Chandler and Monica leaving NY city with their babies to start a new family life. The time for Friends has ended and the new chapter of Family has begun.
FRIENDS showed just a snapshot of some of the best years of anyone's life and Chandler was probably the most relatable and enjoyable character for most to watch.
No series of clips could be complete without the opening credits (this one from season 1) and the famous I'll be there for you song. Of course they always were there for so many of us. Then we see the very final scene from the 10th season and it was Chandler who ended the show with a joke which still makes me simultaneously laugh and cry.
The final clip is a goodbye to Mr Heckles, who the most OG Chandler fans will relate to. Mr Heckles was a hateful neighbour who use to bang on his roof at the friends above to keep the noise down. When he died, Chandler had to help clear out his apartment and realised Mr Heckles had been the funny guy like him. Mr Heckles had died alone and miserable, and it was a big turning point for Chandler to make a conscious effort to try and find a wife and some happiness for himself.
Goodbye friend 😔
Goodbye Chandler Bing.
Goodbye Matthew Perry, hope you rest easy mate. Nov 5, 2023
Flick Chat and News Happy Hallowe'en FCN
It's All Hallow's Eve! Many mistake Hallowe'en as a pagan holiday because of the modern day associations with horror evil and spirits. But actually it is an old Christian celebration beginning tonight with a feast, and tomorrow celebrations in memory of the dead. It is actually more similar to the Mexican Day of the Dead which is celebrated around the same time. The only real difference being that for Mexico the celebration is much more a joyful and colourful celebration of the lives of the dead, but for the Christian tradition is was always steeped in darkness and grief over their death. I guess this is why it has become more associated with horror in time in the West.
Anyway, I wanted to join the Hallowe'en competition, with a post about what I would change not just in 1 horror movie, but in the genre as a whole. Some of you know I have a big interest in gender and feminism, and it always leads me to question these sorts of roles in all aspects of life. I think sometimes movie makers stick to gender norms and miss an opportunity to really make some horrible sick shit with movies 😅
Now it wouldn't work too well with some, like Hocus Pocus with some male witches is maybe a vibe for 2023 🙄😝 but it doesn't do it for me.
But some other movies could swap the gender roles and have some success.
Maybe you can imagine The Ring with a little boy instead of a little girl?
Or maybe you can imagine The Shining but instead of Jack, the father losing his sanity and hunting his family, I would love to see a female, the mother has lost her mind and is chasing her husband and children. Do you think it would work?
Or maybe you want to go another level of fucked up like me.. I want to see Freddy Kreuger with a female. You see when we flip the gender stereotype, and have a woman sexually abusing or murdering children, it becomes even more horrible. Make her a mom, a teacher or a daycare owner, and make it a really disgusting narrative. Now Fredi is even more terrifying when she comes for you in your dreams.
What do you think? What other horror films would you like to see with a reversed gender role?
And now to remove your trauma, enjoy some cute pumpkins from my house 🤭Oct 31, 2023

Flick Chat and News
Flick Chat and News This week I have been watching a local series about our prison service in Northern Ireland, and one local prison, Maghaberry. If you can access BBC iplayer, it is free here:
Stephen Nolan is a really famous local radio host, presenter and notorious devil's advocate. He's marmite personified. He visits the prison and learns about the justice it serves, the problems it has, stories from prisoners and the crimes the committed.
It's a really fascinating series, crossing between true crime docu, history, humour (one prisoner keeps yelling "Stevie, they're treating us like criminals in here!🤣) and local politics. Of course at times it is heartbreaking to hear the crimes that see these men locked away, but also to see how this society treats prisoners.
Watching it is the first time I really thought about what happens with justice beyond the courts, and the reality of how prisoners live out their time in prison. Many of them suffered really poor mental health, some had drug addictions and had suffered all sorts of abuse. It's a really thought provoking series, making you question everything from details of crimes and motives, to how justice is served and how prisoners can be treated fairly or unfairly.
The series also showed some tragic scenes intentionally and unintentionally. One prisoner had some tragic mental health problems, while another seemed to have some sort of learning disability. You have to wonder if these men should be housed in a prison at all, or if surely they require a different facility to rehabilitate or punish them.
All in, i'd really recommend it, if you're interested in any of the topics covered. Sep 12, 2023
