Oliver Bearman's Haas contract talks have stalled over a €6 million pay gap, with the British driver requesting the figure and the team considering it too high.
Oliver Bearman faces one of the most delicate crossroads of his young career. The British driver wants to stay at Haas, the team that gave him his Formula 1 debut, but negotiations to renew his contract ahead of 2027 have stalled over a significant pay gap. According to Marc Limacher, Bearman's camp would have requested six million euros for next season, a figure the American team's executives consider too high, even though both sides have made it clear they want to continue together.
Bearman's position is backed by his results. In 2025, the Briton finished the season ahead of his then teammate, Esteban Ocon, with 41 points compared to 38. In 2026, the trend has been maintained: Bearman leads the internal duel by 23 points to 7 despite the fact that Haas is going through a complicated stage in which the car is not at the level of its direct rivals; his consistent performance and his ability to extract the maximum from a limited car have consolidated him as one of the most promising youngsters on the grid.
"On my part and on the team's, there is the maximum willingness to continue together, with enthusiasm and determination," Bearman declared on the media day of the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The driver also pointed out that his team manages the pending details with Ferrari's support, which shows the close link he has with the Italian team, which he has been part of since his time in the young driver academy.
However, Bearman does not hide his aspirations: "I am very happy at Haas, and I feel motivated, but I think that at some point I will have earned through work, results, and consistency the opportunity to aspire to a top-level team. Due to my long and special link with Ferrari, that remains the final objective, in which I concentrate my energies and my greatest ambition," the Briton stated, a statement that makes clear that his stage at Haas is a springboard towards a greater objective.
The problem is that the road to Maranello doesn't look simple in the short term. Charles Leclerc has a long-term contract with the Scuderia, while Lewis Hamilton could continue beyond 2027, leaving few doors open for Bearman in the short term; that is why renewing with Haas could be the most sensible decision for the Briton, though the economics would need to be adjusted. Staying at the American team would let him keep growing, build experience, and be ready if an opportunity arises at Ferrari in the future.
The negotiation between Bearman and Haas is more than a simple question of money; it is about defining the future of a driver who aspires to the highest and of a team that needs talent to continue advancing. Both parties know that the agreement must be fair for the relationship to continue being fruitful; time will tell if the conversations reach a good port or if, on the contrary, the Briton is forced to look for other horizons, meanwhile Bearman continues demonstrating on track that he deserves to be in Formula 1 and his future, although uncertain, promises to be exciting.
