The German team will equip both W17s with the Sepang updates to expand data with Antonelli and Russell.
Mercedes has made a strategic decision that transcends immediate performance: the German team has confirmed that it will bring its upgrade package, introduced in Sepang, to both cars at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. A bet that seeks to expand the data sample with Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell competing with the same specification and that responds to a clear intention: to define the development direction of the W18 ahead of 2027.
Bradley Lord, Mercedes deputy director, explained the reasons for this choice: "Singapore has been for us a weekend of experiments and we have learned very useful things, we decided to carry out the experiment as soon as possible after Sepang because we had the components available although it has meant hard work for the mechanics: two days of work for them. We have analyzed the data and we have been able to understand in which aspects we have not managed to place the car in the adequate balance range" Lord declared.
The main challenge for Mercedes is to find the optimal operating window, the new pieces offer a promising performance but their effectiveness depends on achieving a correct balance. If the team does not manage to place the car in that margin, the advantages disappear quickly, the differences between qualifying and race in Singapore illustrated this difficulty: "In qualifying we managed to extract more potential from the new package, our performance was no longer as good, even so we qualified in a fairly advanced position. Then in the race Kimi was able to maintain an excellent pace, perhaps not Max Verstappen's but undoubtedly competitive compared to that of the other cars on track" Lord added.
The team's conclusion is that it still needs to better understand the W17's behavior with this configuration before extracting all its potential, the competition from Red Bull, which has won the last two races, forces Mercedes to maintain the development rhythm: "Red Bull is in full form but we believe we have begun to find the right path with the new upgrade package for the W17, the margin in which the novelties work remains narrow so for the drivers it is like running on the edge of a knife. If the balance is adequate the car is fast, but it can quickly leave that optimal margin and that's why we will have to keep working on it intensely" Lord explained.
Antonelli had already hinted at this intention after the Singapore race: "I think we will both return in Austin with the new package, it is important to understand what the adequate range is in which to place the car, the potential of this package is there but it is wise to continue using it because we have to understand in which direction to go ahead of next year" the Italian stated. Toto Wolff shares that vision although the team director made clear that the decision had to be contrasted with the technical analysis of the coming days.
Austin will be an important test to determine how far this new technical philosophy can go. With Antonelli and Russell sharing configuration, Mercedes will be able to compare their sensations and results in more homogeneous conditions, the objective is not only to improve the W17 in the next races but to gather information that helps decide how the W18 should evolve.
The advantage that Mercedes has built in the championship gives it a certain margin to dedicate resources to this learning without losing sight of its sporting objectives, now the challenge consists of converting the observed potential into consistent performance and establishing whether the Sepang solution can become the basis of its next car.
