Adam Schenk seeks a historic repeat at the 2026 Butterfield Bermuda Championship as Ben James, Austin Smotherman and PGA Tour players battle for crucial FedExCup points.
The 2026 Butterfield Bermuda Championship isn't just another stop on the PGA Tour schedule. For several players arriving at Port Royal Golf Course, this week's tournament could determine whether they're competing with full PGA Tour privileges next season.
Defending champion Adam Schenk headlines the October 22-25 event in Southampton, Bermuda, where 500 FedExCup points and a $6 million purse are available.
Schenk is chasing history after capturing his first PGA Tour victory in his 243rd career start last November. His one-stroke victory over Chandler Phillips made him the tournament's seventh different champion, and nobody has successfully defended the Bermuda title.
Repeating won't be easy.
Schenk enters the week ranked No. 163 in the FedExCup standings, putting him well outside the top 100 players who retain full playing privileges for 2027.
That's the kind of pressure that makes the FedExCup Fall particularly compelling.
Several recognizable names are fighting to protect their positions near the critical cutoff. Max Greyserman sits 99th, Phillips is 98th, Lee Hodges occupies 100th and former Bermuda champion Seamus Power is 103rd.
Taylor Pendrith, a three-time International Team Presidents Cup participant, enters at No. 96.
One strong finish could dramatically change their outlook.
Meanwhile, Ben James arrives with considerable momentum after three consecutive top-five finishes. The rising star has recorded four top-five results in his last six PGA Tour appearances and ranks second in FedExCup points among this week's entrants behind Austin Smotherman.
Smotherman recently claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Bank of Utah Championship, establishing himself as another contender.
Corey Conners, ranked 61st in the world, is the highest-ranked player in the field.
The tournament also features an intriguing collection of young talent.
Seventeen-year-old amateur Miles Russell and 2025 U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell received sponsor exemptions, while promising amateur Kihei Akina returns after a top-10 finish at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan.
Local golfers Nick Jones and Camiko Smith will represent Bermuda.
Port Royal presents a different challenge from many PGA Tour venues.
The par-71 layout measures just 6,828 yards, making it relatively short by modern standards. But coastal winds can quickly turn manageable scoring conditions into a demanding test.
Schenk experienced that firsthand last year, closing with an even-par 71 to finish at 12-under 272.
His ability to survive difficult conditions proved decisive.
This year, the stakes extend well beyond the trophy.
Players finishing between 51st and 60th in the FedExCup Fall standings will secure entry into two early 2027 signature events, while those around the top-100 cutoff are competing for their professional futures.
In Bermuda, one excellent week could change an entire career.
The tournament airs Thursday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m. ET on Golf Channel, with PGA Tour Radio coverage beginning at 11 a.m. ET each day.
