Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry reunite at Boston Common Golf following TGL's first player trade, adding another major champion to a loaded roster for the 2027 season.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are getting the band back together, and Boston Common Golf believes the reunion could deliver the franchise its first TGL championship.

Boston made history Monday by acquiring Lowry from The Bay Golf Club in the first player trade since Tiger Woods and McIlroy launched the technology-driven golf league in 2025.

The move reunites two longtime friends who have already demonstrated their chemistry in some of golf's biggest team competitions.

And Boston didn't land the 2019 Open champion for free.

The Bay received Boston's fourth selection in the upcoming roster formation process, the right to exchange one selection position during the next three offseasons, and additional commercial considerations.

The transaction comes as TGL prepares for its third season, with rosters expanding from four players to five.

For Lowry, the opportunity to compete alongside McIlroy made Boston an attractive destination.

"Having Rory alongside me and being part of this group makes it particularly exciting," Lowry said in announcing the move.

McIlroy was equally enthusiastic about adding his Ryder Cup teammate.

"Shane is a great friend and someone I love having alongside me in team competition," McIlroy said.

Their partnership has already produced memorable results.

The Irish stars teamed up to win the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA Tour's only official two-player team event. They also played together during Europe's victorious 2025 Ryder Cup campaign, where Lowry delivered the clinching putt in singles competition.

Lowry brings substantial individual credentials, too.

He captured the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush by six strokes and added another Irish Open victory in 2026, winning his national championship by an impressive 11 shots.

Boston's roster now features McIlroy, Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley, giving the franchise an imposing collection of major championship experience.

The timing is particularly interesting.

Boston finished atop TGL's regular-season standings in 2026 but fell to Jupiter Links Golf Club in the semifinals.

Adding Lowry gives the team another accomplished competitor capable of performing under pressure.

Meanwhile, The Bay gains roster flexibility as the league undergoes its biggest expansion yet.

Motor City Golf Club joins TGL as its seventh franchise, with five-time major champion Brooks Koepka and highly regarded amateur Jackson Koivun among its headline additions.

Complete five-player rosters are scheduled to be unveiled Tuesday, October 20.

Boston opens its new campaign January 2 against Los Angeles Golf Club.

For McIlroy and Lowry, the expectations will be immediate.

They've already won together on the PGA Tour and helped Europe capture Ryder Cup glory.

Now they'll try to turn that proven partnership into a TGL championship for Boston.
