The Houston Astros definitely have an interesting offseason ahead of them as owner Jim Crane and the rest of the organization have to find the next general manager, the next manager as well as needing to manage player movement with extensions and possible trades to put this team in a solid position for 2027.

Honing in on the general manager part of this, it appears the Astros may have their sites on a few different candidates, but they also could be looking to add an assistant GM to the mix as well.

According to Brian McTaggart and Francys Romero, Crane and the Astros interviewed current Colorado Rockies senior advisor Oz Ocampo for an assistant GM position on Monday.

In the report from McTaggart, he did note that there was some history between the Astros and Ocampo, as he was with Houston from 2012-2020 and in 2022, was part of helping the Astros to be very successful in the postseason during that stretch with the 2017 World Series title being one of the best accomplishments as that was Houston's first World Series victory in franchise history,

One more thing McTaggart noted about Ocampo was the fact that he signed a variety of international players who were solid for the Astros, which shows his ability to find talent regardless of where he looks for it.

With Ocampo being interviewed, it is worth wondering if there would be any changes with the assistant GMs if Ocampo does join Houston. Currently, the assistant GMs include Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff who in addition to senior advisor Jeff Bagwell and Crane all give input on the baseball operations side of things.

There is not a clear indication as to whether or not Crane would move on from Cook, Dickey, or Huff if Ocampo is brought in, but that is just something to keep in mind.

Now looking at what Ocampo could bring to the Astros, the biggest things are continuity as well as an understanding of how Crane likes to run things and the types of players he likes to bring in.

As a result of Ocampo having previous experience with the Astros and Crane, this could be a great hire because Ocampo does understand what made Houston successful, and he also has experience as an assistant GM, as he served in that role for the Miami Marlins from 2022 to 2024, which should help him if Crane decides he wants to bring Ocampo back to Houston.

While this was just an interview for Ocampo, his previous experience in Houston as well as his time as the assistant GM for the Marlins, could end up helping him to rejoin the Astros and potentially give Houston another mind in the front office to aid them on their path to being more than an average playoff team, but instead a true World Series contender on a consistent basis.
