For the first time in 32 years, the Toronto Blue Jays earned a win in the World Series.
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers after the lineup put up a dominant performance.
The lineup truly shined in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With the game tied 2-2, the Blue Jays loaded the bases with no outs against Los Angeles starting pitcher Blake Snell in the sixth.
Dodgers reliever Emmet Sheehan entered the game to try and get out of the jam. Snell, who entered the game with a 0.86 ERA through three postseason starts, struck out four batters, walked three, hit a batter and allowed five earned runs on eight hits in five innings pitched.
Instead of getting out of the jam, the Blue Jays burst the game open against Sheehan.
Toronto third baseman Ernie Clement gave his team the lead with an RBI single. Left fielder Nathan Lukes was walked with the bases loaded and shortstop Andres Gimenez hit his own respective RBI single.
The trio of scores put the Blue Jays up 5-2. The team still had the bases loaded with no outs after Gimenez's single.
Two at-bats later, Addison Barger entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Davis Schneider. Barger hit a grand slam to center field to give Toronto a 9-2 lead. Barger became the first player to hit a pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history.
The Blue Jays weren't done scoring after Barger's grand slam. Alejandro Kirk added another pair of runs with a two-run home run.
When Toronto entered the bottom of the sixth, the game was tied 2-2. At the end of the sixth, the Blue Jays led 11-2. The home team had 12 hitters come to the plate in the sixth inning.
Los Angeles was at too much of a deficit to come back in the final three innings, but the team made sure to not leave the score at the result from the sixth inning.
Dodgers designated hitter and defending National League MVP Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run home run, his sixth homer of the postseason, in the top of the seventh. That hit resulted in the eventual final of 11-4.
The sixth inning was a total shift from how the game started.
Los Angeles broke out to a 2-0 lead through the first three innings. Left fielder Kike Hernandez hit an RBI single in the top of the second and catcher Will Smith hit an RBI single in the top of the third.
Toronto center fielder Daulton Varsho hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.
The Blue Jays will have an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series in Game 2 at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday at Rogers Centre in Toronto. Kevin Gausman will start for Toronto and Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start for Los Angeles.
