Major League Baseball announced their Gold Glove award winners for the American League and National League on Monday. And a Toronto Blue Jays infielder was one of the biggest snubs from the list of winners.
Toronto third baseman Ernie Clement was one of the AL Gold Glove finalists for the third base position alongside Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez and Kansas City Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia.
The award was won by Garcia.
Clement was denied his first career Gold Glove despite leading the major leagues in several advanced statistics.
Clement led the majors in defensive wins above replacement (dWAR) with 2.9 and had 22 defensive runs saved (DRS), which also led the majors.
Clement also had positional diversity. He played 603 innings at third base, 423.1 at second base, 170 innings at shortstop and 69 innings at first base.
While playing third, Clement posted a .979 fielding percentage and committed just four errors in 194 total chances. In total, Clement had a .979 fielding percentage across 525 total chances in 1,265.1 total chances on defense this season.
Clement was denied the reward for his defense, but now owns an MLB record after his stellar postseason.
The Blue Jays made it to Game 7 of the World Series before ultimately falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
During Toronto's postseason run, Clement's first time competing in the playoffs, he scored 13 runs in 18 games but hit six doubles, a triple and a home run with nine RBIs. He slashed .411/.416/.562 with a .978 OPS. Clement had 30 hits, which set an MLB postseason record.
For the season, Clement scored 83 runs in 157 games and hit 35 doubles, two triples and nine homers with 50 RBIs and slashed .277/.313/.398 with a .711 OPS.
Clement is under team control for the next several seasons and is up for arbitration in 2026.
