Nick Sandlin, who dealt with injuries this past year, was moved off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster Friday

The Toronto Blue Jays are gearing up for what could potentially be a major offseason.

The Blue Jays are coming off an American League pennant and were one win away from a World Series championship. They lost 5-4 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series in extra innings.

Toronto has been linked to several highly-coveted players in free agency this offseason, and the club recently made a move to clear up space on the 40-man roster for potential acquisitions.

The Blue Jays sent right-handed pitcher Nick Sandlin outright to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Friday (Nov. 14).

Sandlin was acquired by Toronto, along with middle infielder Andres Gimenez, in a deal with the Cleveland Guardians on Dec. 10, 2024. The Guardians received first baseman Spencer Horwitz and outfielder Nick Mitchell in return.

The Guardians shipped off Horwitz to the Pittsburgh Pirates the same day, effectively making the swap Gimenez and Sandlin for Mitchell.

Gimenez and Sandlin are the only players of the trio to have played in the majors. Gimenez scored 39 runs in 101 games this year and hit 11 doubles, a triple and seven home runs with 35 RBIs. He slashed .210/.285/.313 with a .598 OPS.

Sandlin spent most of 2025 dealing with injuries. He was placed on the 15-day injured list April 20 due to a right lat strain that kept him out of action for two months.

Sandlin returned to the 15-day IL July 8 with right elbow inflammation and was transferred to the 60-day IL Sept. 1.

Sandlin posted a 2.20 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched across 19 appearances in the majors with Toronto this season. In the minor leagues, he had three outings in Triple-A and posted a 33.75 ERA and fanned one batter in 1.1 innings pitched.

Sandlin was picked in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft by Cleveland out of Southern Mississippi. He made his major league debut in 2021 and had 61 appearances in 2023 and 68 in 2024 before being traded to the Blue Jays.

Sandlin could return to the 40-man roster in the offseason based on the moves Toronto makes, but it would require the organization selecting his contract. If the 40-man roster is full in that situation, another player would have to be DFA'd or moved off to make room for Sandlin.
