Following a dominant stretch on the mound, a resurgent Shane Bieber has ignited a high-stakes bidding war that the Milwaukee Brewers could be in on.
After being on the shelf for the first three months of the season, it seems like the Toronto Blue Jays' Shane Bieber is trending in the right direction.
Bieber is coming off a stellar seven-inning start that has the team he just dominated, the Tampa Bay Rays, extremely interested in pulling off a trade.
MLB Network's Jon Morosi notes that the Milwaukee Brewers are indeed interested as well, as are the Chicago White Sox.
At this point, it seems like it could be a three-team race for Bieber. Morosi believes his trade value is "trending upward" after that start on Thursday, July 23, but it's extremely important that the Brewers don't fall into a trap and overpay.
Bieber is a rental worth exploring
There's no hiding the fact that the Brewers have at least touched base with the Detroit Tigers about Tarik Skubal, but if they're keen on bringing in a veteran pitcher as a 2026 rental, Bieber could be that guy.
After posting a 6.00 ERA in the month of June, Bieber has doubled the number of games he's pitched in during July, and his ERA for the month is 4.15. More impressively, he's given up just one earned run in his last 13 innings pitched.
Bieber, 31, cashed in on his player option, so he's making a hefty $16 million this season. Milwaukee wouldn't be required to eat much of that, but it's still not a cheap rental to bring in, especially knowing the chances of them signing him to a long-term deal are slim to none.
Morosi said the Brewers are "among the teams active in the rotation market," and that's something that comes as no surprise. Kyle Harrison is still on the Injured List, and the likes of Brandon Woodruff and Quinn Priester have been shut down for the remainder of the season.
Bieber has looked great in his last two starts
Skubal isn't the healthiest guy in the world either, so that shouldn't be an excuse to rule out Bieber. The former Cleveland Guardians ace started just seven games during his first season with the Blue Jays in 2025. Here in 2026, he's set to match that number with his next scheduled start.
For the Brewers, they need to keep a close eye on Bieber. He should be taking the mound again on Tuesday, July 28, and if he manages to put together a third consecutive quality start, then they should absolutely pick up the phone and see if there's a deal that can be made.
