Catcher William Contreras helped support the Milwaukee Brewers' pitching staff and delivered in a big, big way during the World Series championship run.
When talking about catchers in World Series history, names like Yogi Berra and Johnny Bench might come to mind first. Well, make room for another catcher in the pantheon of series-winning catchers.
William Contreras was a guy who wore his emotions on his sleeve, but turned those emotions into a competitive spirit. His teammates have consistently praised Contreras throughout the season.
On Wednesday night, after the Milwaukee Brewers won their first World Series championship in franchise history, Contreras was recognized for his play behind and at the plate.
Contreras delivered for Brewers
Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player as the Brewers celebrated together as a team. Milwaukee, behind Jacob Misiorowski's pitching, Cooper Pratt's hitting, and Contreras' combined effort, stopped the Tampa Bay Rays in five games.
In the postseason and 2026 World Series combined, Contreras hit .373 with an OPS of 1.036. He was 7-for-19 in 51 at-bats, hitting three home runs, collecting nine RBIs, and one stolen base. Contreras had an OBP of .448.
"I don't have words to say for what I am feeling, but I am appreciative of my teammates," Contreras said through an interpreter to Fox's Kevin Burkhardt. Pitcher Aaron Ashby came up alongside to join Contreras.
"This team's not what it is without this guy," Ashby said. "He wants to compete, he wants to die for anyone on this team. He's our bulldog and we love him."
When asked what it means to win the World Series and the MVP title, "I mean everything. I'm really proud. Let's go Brewers."
Contreras brothers celebrate moment
In a touching moment before talking with Fox's MLB crew of Burkhardt, David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, Contreras' brother, fellow MLB player Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox, gave his brother a big, big hug.
"Means a lot, means everything to me," William said.
Contreras isn't for the faint of heart sometimes. He does wear those emotions on his sleeve, but in talking with the media and his teammates after the game, tears were in his eyes.
Someone even came up and put a Venezuelan flag around his shoulders, too. He is a native of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. William was part of the World Baseball Classic-winning Venezuelan team, so he has two championships to celebrate right now.
During the 2026 MLB season, he had a slash line of .270/.341/.758 with 18 home runs, 91 RBIs, and one stolen base.
In handling pitchers like Misiorowski, Trevor Megill, Logan Henderson and others, Contreras knew that he had a lot to focus on this season. Again and again, Contreras was able to come up in a clutch way.
Now, he'll have that World Series MVP title with him for the rest of his life.
