Top to bottom, the St. Louis Cardinals will be completely open to change under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.
Bloom is overseeing what will likely be a years-long rebuild for the Cardinals. There is already obvious talent on the team, such as 2025 Gold Glove-winning shortstop Masyn Winn and Silver Slugger-winning utility player Alec Burleson.
But it doesn't seem any player is off limits in this rebuild.
Multi-time All-Stars like third baseman Nolan Arenado and starting pitcher Sonny Gray have been linked in trade rumors for months dating back to last offseason.
A 2025 All-Star infielder, Brendan Donovan, has been mentioned in the rumor mill and he could be one of the most highly-coveted players in the trade market this offseason.
"(Donovan) is, in many ways, the avatar for where the St. Louis Cardinals are at the moment," MLB insider Jon Morosi said in an appearance on MLB Network. "Chaim Bloom has just come in as the president of baseball operations. He is listening on basically every veteran who is starting to make arbitration money or more than that. And Brendan Donovan, because he is able to play above-average defense multiple spots around the diamond, Brendan Donovan is garnering widespread interest from exactly the teams you would hope to be getting interest from: the (Los Angeles Dodgers), the (New York Mets), (the New York Yankees). He could be some insurance in terms of if the (Philadelphia Phillies) don't re-sign Kyle Schwarber. ... And, yes, the Houston Astros. The same argument for (Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan) applies to Donovan — lefty bat who can certainly be an anchor for your lineup. I think if you look at those two possibilities, Kwan and Donovan, a higher chance that Donovan is moved and I think that lefty bat I think is one of the most valuable ones around the game."
This past season, Donovan has scored 64 runs in 118 games and hit 32 doubles and 10 home runs with 59 RBIs. He slashed .287/.353/.422 with a .775 OPS.
Donovan will play 2026 under his first year of arbitration and will have several more years of team control.
If a team does trade for Donovan, they'll have a versatile defender capable of playing multiple positions as well as a consistent on-base threat with a good hit-to-contact tool.
