Once the Arizona Diamondbacks caught fire against the Athletics on Wednesday, they did not let up.

The Arizona Diamondbacks secured the series victory against the Athletics in blowout fashion on Wednesday, winning 15-5 at Chase Field in Phoenix.

The big win brings the Diamondbacks to 4-2 to start the second half of the season, and they won both series in their homestand. How did they get it done on Wednesday?

Lighting up the middle innings

After both teams went scoreless in the first and second innings, the Athletics struck first in the third to take a 1-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks did not respond initially, but when they did, they brought a crushing blow to the Athletics.

Arizona responded in the fourth when Corbin Carroll hit a leadoff solo home run that tied the game. Subsequently, the Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead when Nolan Arenado homered as well.

The deep balls by Carroll and Arenado prefaced what was to come for Arizona’s batting order, as it was hardly done yet. After the Athletics tied the game in the top of the fifth via a Jeff McNeil home run, the Diamondbacks blew the game open.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ketel Marte hit a leadoff double. Then, after the Athletics notched two outs, rookie left-hander Gage Jump threw a wild pitch that Marte used to score and help his team reclaim the lead.

Gabriel Moreno followed up Marte’s score with a solo home run, and after Arenado drew a walk, Ildemaro Vargas hit an RBI double to make it a 5-2 game. When James McCann stepped up to the plate, he launched a two-run home run before Ryan Waldschmidt launched the third home run of the inning for the Diamondbacks. It was also Waldschmidt’s first career home run.

With a 9-2 lead, the Diamondbacks could have taken their foot off the gas and been just fine. Instead, they floored it.

In the sixth, Arizona logged five more runs. The inning began playing in its favor when Carroll hit a one-out triple to center field. Then, after Carroll scored on a wild pitch by Yunior Tur, Moreno, Arenado and Vargas all drew consecutive walks.

With the bases loaded, McCann delivered again, this time in the form of an RBI single. The Athletics took Tur off the mound in favor of Hayden Juenger, but it was futile as Tim Tawa hit a two-RBI double before Waldschmidt added a sacrifice-fly RBI to finish up a five-run frame.

The Diamondbacks added one more run in the eighth thanks to an RBI single by Tyler Locklear, and that was more than enough to put a mountain of distance between them and the Athletics. After the Diamondbacks went deep into their bullpen in Tuesday’s extra-innings win, manager Torey Lovullo put Vargas, who is primarily an infielder, on the mound.

The Athletics briefly took advantage of the switch by scoring two runs in the ninth, but it was a drop in a bucket of water, given the score, and Arizona closed the game with ease.
