Avery Owusu-Asiedu has turned a promising set of tools into an impressive breakout August with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
For years, Avery Owusu-Asiedu has offered the kind of physical tools that can make a prospect stand out. Now, the Arizona Diamondbacks are beginning to see those tools translate into consistent production.
The 23-year-old outfielder has erupted during August, putting together the most productive stretch of his professional career and forcing his name further into the conversation surrounding Arizona's prospect pipeline.
Owusu-Asiedu has been particularly impressive since moving up to Double-A Amarillo earlier this month. In 14 games since the promotion, he has posted a .491 batting average while continuing to provide plenty of damage at the plate.
His recent performance reached another level Wednesday.
Owusu-Asiedu collected three hits and three RBIs against Corpus Christi, including a home run that extended his streak to four consecutive games with a long ball. It marked the second time this month that he had homered in four straight games.
The recent power surge is only one part of what has made August so encouraging.
Owusu-Asiedu has recorded 35 hits and 31 RBIs during the month, leading all Minor League players in both categories. He has also produced a 1.038 slugging percentage, showing just how much impact he has been making whenever he puts the ball in play.
The production comes after Arizona moved him up from High-A Hillsboro.
That promotion represented an important opportunity for Owusu-Asiedu, who had previously struggled to turn his considerable physical gifts into sustained offensive success. His combination of size, speed and power has always made him an intriguing player, but consistency at the plate had been a major part of his development.
Now, he is beginning to show what his ceiling can look like when everything works together.
Owusu-Asiedu entered the 2026 season as Arizona's No. 29 prospect and had already received some exposure to the organization at Spring Training. He also participated in the club's Spring Breakout game, providing an early glimpse of the athleticism that has helped make him such an intriguing prospect.
His road to this point has been unusual.
Born in Canada, Owusu-Asiedu spent part of his childhood in England before eventually settling in Wisconsin. He played college baseball at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and later established himself on the professional radar before the Philadelphia Phillies selected him in the ninth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Arizona acquired him during the offseason in a trade with the Phillies.
The Diamondbacks are now hoping that a change of scenery and continued development can unlock the player they believed was hiding inside the raw tools.
Owusu-Asiedu's early struggles make his current run even more notable. He had difficulty producing consistently during his time in the lower levels, despite regularly demonstrating impressive physical ability.
That makes his recent stretch more than just a hot streak. It is an opportunity for him to show that his offensive approach has developed enough to allow his power and athleticism to play more consistently against tougher competition.
There will still be challenges ahead.
Double-A pitching will provide a much stronger test, and opposing teams will eventually adjust to Owusu-Asiedu. Maintaining this level of production over a longer period will be the next challenge.
For the Diamondbacks, however, the progress is encouraging. Owusu-Asiedu has always possessed the raw ingredients of an intriguing prospect. His recent performance suggests those ingredients may finally be coming together.
