Druw Jones continues to develop into one of the minor leagues’ best defensive outfielders for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Druw Jones has built a reputation as one of the best defensive outfielders in the minor leagues, and his latest performance offered another reminder of why the Arizona Diamondbacks prospect remains so highly regarded.

Jones recorded his 13th outfield assist of the season Friday as Double-A Amarillo defeated the San Antonio Missions, 17-1. The throw gave him a share of the minor-league lead among outfielders in assists, adding another impressive defensive moment to a resume that already includes multiple accolades.

The 22-year-old has been making his presence felt with his glove since entering professional baseball. Jones was recognized as the 2025 MiLB Defender of the Year, and his defensive ability has continued to separate him from many of the other prospects in the Diamondbacks organization.

MLB Pipeline respects Jones' fielding

MLB Pipeline currently gives Jones a 70-grade fielding tool on the traditional 20-80 scouting scale, placing him among a select group of prospects across the sport with that level of defensive potential.

His arm strength is a major part of that package.

Runners have repeatedly been willing to challenge Jones in the outfield, only to discover that attempting to take an extra base can come with significant consequences. His latest assist was another example of how quickly he can turn a baserunning opportunity into an out.

While Jones' defense has long been considered his calling card, his offensive development remains an important part of his overall trajectory.

The No. 2 overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft has experienced some inconsistency at the plate during his professional career. However, there have been increasingly encouraging stretches, particularly since the second half of the 2025 season.

Jones has shown that he can produce impact offensive moments when everything clicks. He hit for the first cycle in Amarillo franchise history earlier this season and has also displayed considerable power, giving the Diamondbacks another potential avenue for him to contribute at the major-league level.

Jones looking sharp in September

September has been another encouraging month.

Through his first nine games of the month, Jones was hitting .351 with a .400 on-base percentage and .541 slugging percentage. That followed another strong stretch in June, when he posted a .368 batting average and a .989 OPS.

There are still areas of his offensive game that Jones will need to refine. His strikeout rate remains high, while he has also produced a significant number of ground balls. Those issues could limit his offensive consistency if they remain long term.

Still, Jones has other tools capable of changing games.

His speed is one of them. Jones has stolen 37 bases this season, using his plus-plus running ability to create pressure once he reaches base.

That combination of speed, defensive range, arm strength and developing power gives Jones a path to becoming a valuable all-around player even if he never develops into a consistently high-average hitter.

The Diamondbacks selected Jones with the second pick in the 2022 Draft, hoping to add another elite athlete to their organization. Four years later, his defensive development has largely lived up to those expectations, while his bat continues to show signs of catching up.

For Jones, the next step is finding greater consistency offensively without sacrificing the defensive abilities that already make him one of the more intriguing prospects in Arizona's system.

His latest month suggests that progress is continuing.
