While Robbie Ray and Heliot Ramos continue drawing interest from contenders, some of the biggest names connected to trade speculation are expected to stay in San Francisco.
One of those players is Logan Webb.
Every selling team receives calls regarding its best talent, making it unsurprising that rival teams have at least explored whether the Giants would consider moving their ace.
However, there is little indication that scenario is realistic.
Webb remains the unquestioned leader of San Francisco’s rotation and one of the most important players in the organization. The Giants continue viewing him as a foundational piece rather than a trade chip.
Why keeping Webb makes sense
Moving Webb would signal the beginning of a complete rebuild, and nothing from the front office suggests the organization intends to pursue that path.
Unless another team presents an extraordinary offer that completely changes the conversation, Webb is expected to remain with the Giants beyond Monday’s trade deadline.
That does not mean San Francisco will stand still.
The Giants still have several important decisions to make, and multiple veterans could still be moved as the team reshapes its roster for the future.
The difference is that those discussions are expected to center on players who are not viewed as long-term cornerstones.
Webb clearly falls into a different category.
Webb is 6-7 with a 3.93 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 119 innings over 19 starts this season. In his last start he gave up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings in a 16-3 home win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
He continued showing why he remains so valuable. Performances like that reinforce why rival teams continue asking about him, even if the likelihood of a trade remains extremely small.
For the Giants, Webb represents much more than their best starting pitcher. He is expected to remain one of the central pieces around whom the organization attempts to build its next contender.
Webb’s importance
Webb has established himself as one of MLB’s most dependable starters through consistency, competitiveness, and durability. Every fifth day, the Giants know exactly what they are getting from their ace. This quality becomes increasingly valuable over the course of a long season.
