Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz was arrested for allegedly rigging bets, with a game against the Mariners referenced in the arrest.

Over the last several seasons, there has been more and more suspensions, fines and punishments related to gambling.

Two key pitchers for the Cleveland Guardians are the latest to face punishments for alleged gambling violations.

According to a report on "X" from ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan), Guardians starting pitcher Luis Ortiz and closer Emmanuel Clase were indicted by prosecutors in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sunday. Ortiz was arrested in Boston and Clase still wasn't in custody at the time of the report.

The indictments were related to a scheme to rig micro bets related to games.

According to the indictment, prosecutors allege that Ortiz was paid $5,000 for intentionally throwing a ball in a game against the Seattle Mariners on June 15. Clase was paid $5,000 for facilitating it according to Passan's reporting.

The micro bets that Ortiz and Clase allegedly rigged were related to whether pitches were balls and strikes.

In Ortiz's game against the Mariners on June 15, he struck out five, walked five batters, hit another with a pitch and allowed six earned runs on five hits (one home run) in six innings pitched. The Mariners won the game 6-0. The pitch that allegedly was flagged for suspicious activity was an 87-mph slider that landed in the dirt. It was the first pitch Ortiz threw in the bottom of the second.

Clase didn't make an appearance in the game on June 15, but made an appearance in the game the day before on June 14. The closer, who finished third in American League Cy Young voting in 2024, fanned one, walked three (two intentionally) and allowed two earned runs on as many hits in 0.2 innings pitched. Seattle won that game 4-3.

Ortiz and Clase are facing 65 years in prison, respectively, if they're convicted on all reports, according to Passan's reporting.
