DETROIT — The Seattle Mariners moved one step closer to its first championship series in 24 years on Tuesday.
The Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 8-4 in Game 3 of an American League Divisional Series at Comerica Park in Detroit. The victory gave Seattle a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five ALDS. The Mariners prevailed after a nearly-three hour-long rain delay which pushed the start time from 1:08 p.m. PT/4:08 p.m. ET to 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET.
The M's can clinch a berth to the American League Championship Series in Game 4 of the ALDS, which is set to take place on Wednesday — also at Comerica Park.
Seattle and Detroit knew the date of Game 4 for several days, but there was still a question as to when it would start.
The time slot of the game was in question throughout Tuesday's contest based on the result of the other ALDS Game 3 between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays, which took place the same day.
If the Blue Jays won, it would've meant a series sweep for them and the Mariners and Tigers would have played in the prime time slot at 4:08 p.m. PT/7:08 p.m. ET. If the Yankees won, they and Toronto would face again in the nighttime slot Wednesday and Seattle and Detroit would play at 12:08 p.m. PT/3:08 p.m. ET.
New York came back from down 6-1 to beat the Blue Jays 9-6, which means the Mariners and Tigers will play at 12:08 p.m. PT/3:08 p.m. ET on Wednesday in Detroit. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).
If the M's lose Game 4 on Wednesday, the series will return to T-Mobile Park in Seattle for Game 5 at 4:40 p.m. PT/7:40 p.m. ET on Friday.
If Seattle wins Wednesday, it will wait for the result of Game 4 between the Yankees and Toronto to see whether it will play the Blue Jays, or if the other ALDS will extend to five games.
Bryce Miller will start for the Mariners on Wednesday and Casey Mize will start for the Tigers.
