The Seattle Mariners are set to have home field advantage through the divisional round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
The Mariners won their first American League West title in 24 years and locked up the No. 2 seed through the postseason. As a result, Seattle has a bye through the wild card-round and will host the winner of the best-of-three series between the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series at a to-be-determined time Oct. 4 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
With the Mariners having an extended break before playing their first playoff game, they'll have two live scrimmages/intersquad games Wednesday and Thursday.
Fans looking to support the team in the lead up to the ALDS will be able to attend the scrimmages.
First pitch in the first scrimmage is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday. The first pitch in the second scrimmage is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT on Thursday.
Seattle will try and use the scrimmage to stay warm and fresh for Game 1 of the ALDS, and it will also provide a taste of things to come for Mariners fans, who will be in attendance for just the second home playoff game since 2001.
"Just remembering from playing days, it's a pretty special environment during that time," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Sept. 28. "Seattle fans have an awesome energy to them. And they appreciate it and we appreciate them, as well. We're all looking forward to that first (game) and the excitement that will be in the ballpark, the buzz that will be in the ballpark, and the edge that that brings."
For the scrimmages, Seattle will bring up several players for the taxi squad to compete in the scrimmage, including the organization's top prospect Colt Emerson, rookie pitcher Logan Evans and the team's long-time rookie starting third baseman this season, Ben Williamson.
Fans will be able to purchase tickets to the scrimmages for $10, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Mariners Care foundation.
