We've all heard the 1995 Mariners-Yankees audio from the Mariners side, but how many of you have heard it from the Yankees?
Thursday was the 31-year anniversary of the most famous hit in Seattle Mariners history: The game-winning double off the bat of Edgar Martinez in Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees.
Though some people are tired of the 1995 nostalgia, Martinez's double never gets tired. And neither does the epic Mariners radio call from longtime M's broadcaster Dave Niehaus.
But on Thursday, an amazing thing happened. Admittedly, for the first time ever, I heard the Martinez call from the other side. Rare audio highlights of Game 5 circulated the internet featuring iconic Yankees voices Michael Kay and John Sterling. There's more than nine minutes in total, including Sterling's call of Martinez's double off Josh McDowell.
You can hear them below. Again, I've watched these clips 10,000 times. But I've never seen them from this side.
About Edgar Martinez
An 18-year veteran of the Mariners, Martinez is one of the best beloved players in team history. He hit .312 for his career with 309 homers and 1,261 RBIs. He led the American League in RBIs (145) in 2000 and also led the league in doubles twice. Furthermore, he won two batting titles and three American League on-base percentage crowns. A seven-time All-Star, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
He is one of three Mariners in the Hall of Fame, joining Ken Griffey Jr. and Ichiro Suzuki. He is widely regarded as the greatest designated hitter in baseball history and the annual DH award is named after him.
He has served in a hitting coach capacity for the Mariners on multiple occasions.
Elsewhere in the news for the Mariners
The Mariners are nearly two weeks removed from making a change at manager, and we still haven't heard much about who the team is looking at for the position. Some names have begun to circulate, but one name still worth talking about is current Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, who has ties to the Mariners.
Of course, the Guardians are still playing, so if Vogt is really a candidate, the M's can't entertain the idea of getting him yet. They'd have to trade for him, which is rare, but has happened before.
We spoke with ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney on the most recent 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast to get his perspective on the M's going after Vogt. You can read more here, and you can listen to the full episode below.
