Seattle Mariners American League West rivals the Texas Rangers lost pitching coach Mike Maddux to the Los Angeles Angels

The next next four-to-five months will be critical in determining the future of the Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners are coming off their most successful postseason run in franchise history. They won the American League West title for the first time since 2001, made the American League Championship Series for the first time since '01 and were one win away from advancing the club's first World Series ever.

There's a lot of pressure on Seattle's front office to capitalize on the best playoff run in the team's history and keep the championship window open.

A big step in the Mariners' successful season was winning the AL West title and disrupting the dominance the Houston Astros have had over the division. Before this year, the Astros won four consecutive division titles. Houston as been AL West champs seven of the last nine seasons.

But just because the Mariners were able to unseat the Astros doesn't mean the rest of the division is standing pat.

According to a report from Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports, Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux will be departing his current role with the team to take the same one with the Los Angeles Angels.

Maddux has been the pitching coach for the Rangers for 10 seasons across two stints from 2009-15 and 2023-25.

With Maddux on the coaching staff, Texas won the first World Series in franchise history in 2023 and the pitching staff led the major leagues in ERA in 2025 (3.47). The starting rotation was led the major leagues with a 3.41 ERA. The bullpen was fifth in the majors with a 3.62 ERA.

Maddux's teachings likely play a major role on the Angels.

Los Angeles' pitching staff was one of the worst in the league this season. The pitching staff's ERA was 4.89 which ranked 28th in the majors. The starting rotation's ERA was 4.91, which ranked 28th in baseball. The bullpen ERA (4.86) also ranked 28th in the major leagues.

Including the Rangers and Angels, Maddux has served as the pitching coach for five different organizations. He was with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2003-08, the Washington Nationals from 2016-17 and St. Louis Cardinals from 2018-22.
